Embracer Group has shut down Pieces Interactive, the studio behind 2024’s Alone in the Dark remake after it failed to meet sales expectations.

A statement posted on the studio’s website (spotted by IGN) features a graphic with its logo and the text “thanks for playing with us,” along with the years 2007-2024. It goes on to list some of the games Pieces worked on, including its own titles and the ones it provided support for.

“In 2017, Pieces Interactive were acquired by Embracer Group after working with the expansion for Titan Quest, Titan Quest: Ragnarök and third expansion for Titan Quest, Titan Quest: Atlantis,” the statement read. The last sentence just says: “Our last release was the reimagening [sic] of Alone in the Dark.”

The Alone in the Dark remake released in March 2024 and starred Jodie Comer and David Harbour. In its Q4 financials released in May, Embracer highlighted that sales decreased in the PC and console games segment partially due to the “softer-than-expected performance” from Alone in the Dark and Outcast: A New Beginning. It added that the two games “saw a positive reception from users, but a mixed reception from critics and ultimately performed below management expectations.” In April, Pieces workers reported layoffs.

We found Alone in the Dark to be a mixed experience overall, but it had some silly charm that paid tribute to the 1992 original and showed that Pieces understood traditional horror game design.

It’s been a wild year for Embracer Group. After going on an acquisition spree at the start of the decade, it started laying off workers and shutting down studios like Saints Row’s Volition and Free Radical after a reported $2 billion deal with Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Group fell through. The next major moves involved divesting Saber Interactive and Gearbox Software before announcing in April that it’ll be splitting up into three companies: Asmodee, Coffee Stain & Friends, and Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends.

As stated in a report from GamesIndustry.biz, Embracer CEO Lars Wingefors followed up that announcement by saying the company was done with its restructuring efforts.

Embracer Group has already shut down former Square Enix studio
Deus Ex Go

Embracer Group has reportedly shut down the game studio Onoma, formerly known as Square Enix Montreal. The studio has best known for creating mobile games of Square Enix's Western franchises such as Lara Croft Go, Hitman Go, and Deus Ex Go.

It was announced in May that Embracer Group would purchase Square Enix's Western studios and have control of certain franchises like Tomb Raider and Deus Ex. The timing of Onoma's closure is strange given that it was renamed from Square Enix Montreal only just last month.

During THQ Nordic's 2022 digital showcase, the publisher announced that a reboot of Alone in the Dark by developer Pieces Interactive is coming to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The game revisits the classic 1992 title in all its Southern Gothic horror glory. The player can assume the role of series protagonist Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood. Alone in the Dark takes place in the U.S. during the 1920s and focuses on the disappearance of Emily's uncle. She teams up with Edward to search for Hartwood's uncle through the mansion of Derceto, a psychiatric asylum filled with monsters and surrounded by an evil conspiracy.

Perfect Dark development unaffected by Crystal Dynamics sale

Microsoft and The Initiative confirmed that Crystal Dynamics is still assisting with the development of a new Perfect Dark game following the news of Crystal Dynamics' change of ownership.
On May 2, Embracer Group purchased Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal, Square Enix Montreal, and the series associated with those studios from Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix. As the studio changed hands, it was possible that outside deals like this one with Microsoft could be at risk.
Clearly, that's not the case, even if Microsoft is surprisingly not the one to acquire Crystal Dynamics. Following the announcement, The Initiative confirmed Crystal Dynamics' continued involvement with Perfect Dark via a tweet.
"We’re excited to see Crystal Dynamics take these next steps with their studio," The Initiative's tweet says. "Our teams have made great progress in building Perfect Dark together as co-development partners, and we will be continuing this work with them in their next chapter."

The Initiative is a brand-new studio formed by Microsoft to work on Perfect Dark. The studio has reportedly experienced a high amount of turnover as it builds itself up, so studio head Darrell Gallagher brought his former studio, Crystal Dynamics, on board to help get Perfect Dark over the finish line.
Outside of Perfect Dark, Crystal Dynamics is also working on "exciting experiences from our beloved portfolio of franchises as well as original concepts and IPs developed with partners," according to a tweet from the developer. That includes a brand-new Tomb Raider game built with Unreal Engine 5.
The new Perfect Dark game still doesn't have a release date, but it's expected to launch for PC and Xbox Series X/S. Hopefully, we will see the game again at Xbox and Bethesda's showcase this June!
