Sony announced that PlayStation 4 owners will soon be able to play their favorite console games on Windows and Mac platforms via updated PS4 Remote Play functionality launching this week.
Among other new features, the PlayStation 4’s System Software version 3.50 will give players the ability to stream PlayStation 4 content on a connected Windows or Mac PC at resolutions up to 720p, transforming desktops and laptops into fully featured gaming consoles.
After installing System Software 3.50, players must download Sony’s Remote Play Installer application in order to set up a connected PC for PlayStation 4 software streaming. The process also requires a DualShock 4 controller, which must be connected to the host PC via a USB cable.
While PlayStation 4 Remote Play streaming defaults to 30 frames-per-second output at 540p, players who meet Sony’s bandwidth requirements can increase performance to a maximum of 60 frames-per-second at 720p. Sony additionally offers 360p resolution options for players with limited Internet access.
Microsoft’s competing Xbox One console also offers PC streaming capabilities at resolutions up to 1080p. Xbox One streaming requires Windows 10, however, and is not available for Mac platforms. Sony’s Remote Play functionality supports Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 devices in addition to Mac OS 10.10 and 10.11.
Sony is also overhauling a number of platform-specific social features as part of this week’s PlayStation 4 firmware update. Starting in System Software version 3.50, players will have the ability to schedule events and gameplay sessions with friends via the PlayStation 4’s dashboard.
Other improvements rolling out this week include an “appear offline” option, notifications for when specific friends log in to the PlayStation Network, and a “Play Together” feature that allows all members of a Party to view their friends’ statuses and quickly jump into a game in progress.
The PlayStation 4’s 3.50 System Software update launches tomorrow, April 6, via the PlayStation Network.
