PS5 is the latest gaming hardware to get a price hike

Sony announced that it is increasing the price of the PlayStation 5 at retail in select markets due to inflation and currency trends. Notably, the price in the U.S. will not be affected.

“The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing,” says PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan in a statement on the PlayStation Blog. “We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries.”

The price increase will impact both the digital and disc versions of the console. The new prices are as follows:

Europe
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 550 euros
- PS5 Digital Edition – 450 euros
U.K.
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 480 British pounds
- PS5 Digital Edition – 390 British pounds
Japan (starting on September 15, 2022)
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 60,478 yen (including tax)
- PS5 Digital Edition – 49,478 yen (including tax)
China
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 4,299 yuan
- PS5 Digital Edition – 3,499 yuan
Australia
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – $800 AUD
- PS5 Digital Edition – $650 AUD
Mexico
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – 14,999 Mexican pesos
- PS5 Digital Edition – 12,499 Mexican pesos
Canada
- PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – $650 CAD
- PS5 Digital Edition – $520 CAD

The video game market has been hit hard due to the global semiconductor shortage, which is certainly one of the factors that lead to this price increase. It’s uncertain whether the price increase will eventually come to the U.S., as Sony can always change its mind in the future.

Sony also isn’t the only company to increase the price of its products. Meta hiked up the price for Quest 2 by $100 last month. A few weeks ago, Nintendo confirmed that it would not increase the price of the Switch, while Microsoft has not publicly stated anything regarding the price of the Xbox Series X/S.

Why I kept coming back to Final Fantasy XIV in 2024

The MMO genre is overflowing with titles vying for the attention of anyone willing to invest significant portions of their time in a single game. There are no doubt plenty of killer choices you can make based on what type of combat, endgame, and payment model you prefer, ensuring that you'll almost certainly find one that fits you just right. I've been investing off and on in the genre for over two decades, with thousands of hours poured into everything from old, niche titles like Silkroad Online (which I just learned somehow still exists) to worldwide successes like World of Warcraft and Guild Wars.

In recent years, though, I find myself disappointed in various aspects of many popular MMOs, whether it's an overwhelming focus on endgame raiding, too much PVP-centric content, or unfriendly communities that make me cringe when I even glance at the chat. None of that is a problem when I return to Final Fantasy XIV. I somehow feel at peace each time I load up Square Enix's long-running MMO, and it's becoming harder and harder for me to want to venture elsewhere.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is one of the most ambitious games to launch this year. While a wealth of technical problems held back that ambition when it was released, the experience is vastly improved on the PlayStation 5 Pro from Digital Trends' testing. As such, I highly recommend that PS5 Pro owners looking for games that take advantage of their new hardware pick up Dragon's Dogma 2 this Cyber Monday. While it typically retails at $70, Dragon's Dogma 2 is discounted to $46 on Amazon for Cyber Week.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is lighter on narrative than most other RPGs as it follows an Arisen on their quest to ultimately defeat a dragon that took their heart but did not kill them. Capcom took that approach because the true value of Dragon's Dogma 2 comes from all of the emergent moments that arise during its quest. This is a tough game, but its combat systems also feature a lot of eccentricities that make every battle feel different.
