This has been a hectic month for Sony. It hit massive highs with the reception of Astro Bot and the reveal of the PlayStation 5 Pro but also saw astronomical lows with the shuttering of Concord and backlash toward the PS5 Pro’s $700 price tag. Now, it’s capping off this month with a new State of Play ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2024.

It will feature over 20 PS5 and PlayStation VR2 games, so PlayStation fans should definitely plan on tuning in. For those planning on doing so, I’ve rounded up all the pertinent information on how to watch and what to expect from the September 2024 State of Play.

When is the September 2024 State of Play?

The next State of Play will begin at 3 p.m. PT on September 24. Sony says the show will last over 30 minutes, so make sure you set aside some ample time to watch it this afternoon.

What to expect from the September 2024 State of Play

The official description for September 24’s State of Play says it will feature “news and updates on more than 20 upcoming PS5 and PS VR2 games from studios around the world.” On the Sony-published game front, games like Until Dawn’s remake, Lego Horizon Adventures, and Death Stranding 2: On The Beach may appear here. Lego Horizon Adventures, in particular, is supposed to launch this year but doesn’t have a release date, so that’s a very likely announcement.

On the leaks and rumors front, an ESRB listing for Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered was spotted recently, so it may show up here. There are bound to be some unpredictable third-party surprises for PS5 and PSVR2 here as well, so this State of Play is shaping up to be quite exciting. Hopefully, after watching this State of Play, we will have a very clear idea of what to expect on Sony’s platforms throughout fall 2024 and early 2025.

At the start of June, I wrote about some of the announcements I'd like to see the video game industry make over the course of the month's showcases. Now, we're on the other end of reveal-filled events from Summer Game Fest, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and Ubisoft, and looking back, I had a surprisingly high hit rate. Some leaks turned out to be true, while one pipe dream prediction did come to fruition. Now that the biggest video game showcases of the summer are over, I'm practicing a bit of humility by looking back at what I predicted to see just how right or wrong I was. While I was spot on about three picks, I made two big whiffs.
The re-emergence of Metroid Prime 4: Correct

I had hoped that this summer would finally be the one where we saw Metroid Prime 4 in action; thankfully, that ended up happening. To conclude the latest Nintendo Direct, Retro Studios gave us our first glimpse of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. The short but incredibly dense reveal trailer lived up to my expectations. It not only confirmed the title and release window but gave a look at gameplay as well. This first look indicates that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be one of the most graphically impressive Nintendo Switch games to date.

3 outstanding PS Plus games to play this weekend (June 14-16)

The most announcement-filled week of gaming has wrapped up. From Summer Game Fest to the Xbox Games Showcase and Ubisoft Forward, there was a ton of big gaming news. Many of the games revealed are coming to PlayStation 5, too. On top of that, Sony's Days of Play initiative is still in full swing, which means some more PS2 games finally got PS4 and PS5 ports for the first time in several years. As a result, there's no shortage of relevant games in the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra catalog to check out if you're looking for something to play this weekend.

Three titles stand out to me in particular. The first is the game that cemented the status of a pillar franchise for PlayStation and is getting reinterpreted as a Lego game for kids later this year. Next, there's a Dragon Ball game that looks even better than the manga and anime it's based on and is a nice companion piece to a Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, which launches later this year. Finally, I'm recommending the PS2 classic that put Sucker Punch Productions on the map.

My favorite announcement of Sony's May 30 State of Play was Astro Bot, a new 3D platformer from Team Asobi that celebrates PlayStation history. It looks incredibly charming and stands out from the typical narrative-action games like Stellar Blade that Sony tends to release these days. That said, my excitement also comes with disappointment as it does not appear that the game will support PlayStation VR2. (Digital Trends reached out to Sony to confirm that was the case but has not gotten a response at the time of publishing this story.)
