Pokémon Go creators announce Pikmin augmented-reality game

Following their huge success with Pokémon Go, Nintendo and Niantic have finally gotten around to collaborating on another augmented-reality (AR) game.

The game will be based on Nintendo’s successful Pikmin franchise, but beyond that details are somewhat scant. In an announcement on Monday, March 22, the Japanese entertainment giant only let on that the title is set for launch “later this year” and will include “activities designed to encourage walking and make the activity more enjoyable.”

Niantic isn’t saying much, either, suggesting in a tweet that we “imagine exploring the world through the wonder of AR and alongside all of your pals — including your new Pikmin friends!”

Niantic is headquartered in San Francisco, but the collaboration will be the first title created by its Tokyo Studio, which opened its doors three years ago.

Digital Trends’ gaming specialist Joseph Yaden describes Nintendo’s long-running Pikmin series as “unlike anything you’ve ever played,” adding, “It’s a mix between real-time strategy and puzzle, with action elements sprinkled throughout.” With that in mind, Pikmin fans are sure to go for the new AR game in a big way, similar to how Pokémon fans — and many others besides — descended upon Pokémon Go.

“As we continue to expand our games portfolio, it was a natural next step to team up with Nintendo,” John Hanke, CEO of Niantic, said in a release. “We’re looking forward to shaping the future of AR together, bringing Nintendo’s beloved game characters to life for mobile game players around the world.”

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto commented: “Niantic’s AR technology has made it possible for us to experience the world as if Pikmin are secretly living all around us. Based on the theme of making walking fun, our mission is to provide people with a new experience that’s different from traditional games. We hope that the Pikmin and this app will become a partner in your life.”

You won’t be taking Microsoft’s HoloLens 3 into the metaverse
Microsoft HoloLens 2

As rival Apple is rumored to be eyeing an entrance into the metaverse, Microsoft, an early proponent of mixed and augmented reality applications, is criticized for its blurry vision behind the company's own HoloLens strategy. While HoloLens notched big early wins, including scoring a U.S. Department of Defense contract, subsequent delays, project cancellations, and high-profile executive departures may have resulted in the death of the HoloLens 3. Still, despite a scathing profile by Business Insider, it appears that Microsoft remains, at least publicly, committed to its HoloLens endeavors for now. The company has gone on record to refute the publication's reporting that HoloLens 3 has been killed.

There are a number of factors that may be causing Microsoft to pivot from its early bet on HoloLens, but the Microsoft profile cited internal divisions and the lack of a unified strategy among the top reasons for concern. As a result of the chaos, it appears that the largest collateral damage to Microsoft's infighting is the cancellation of its next-generation HoloLens 3 hardware.

Apple’s rumored mixed-reality (MR) headset has seen some interesting developments in recent days, from details about its powerful chip setup to the likelihood it will use three immersive displays. But today, there’s some bad news: We might have quite a wait to actually buy one.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is considering pushing back the headset’s launch by a few months due to numerous ongoing issues. That could delay its announcement until late 2022 or beyond, with the headset potentially not actually launching until 2023. It’s just the latest in a litany of problems and holdups to have afflicted the device.

Just yesterday we learned that the metaverse is supposedly “off-limits” for Apple’s planned mixed reality headset. Now, a fresh report has claimed the device will use the same 96W power adapter as the latest MacBook Pro and will come loaded with a dual-chip setup, suggesting the headset will have some serious firepower under the hood.

The device is expected to blend augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), the result being a mixed reality (MR) headset that offers the flexibility to switch between AR and VR as you see fit. Previous rumors have suggested it will be bristling with around a dozen cameras, use high-resolution displays, and could also incorporate advanced gesture-recognition tech.
