The Prince of Persia remake has shifted developers

While some may have forgotten that a Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is still being developed, Ubisoft announced a switch in its development team. The very long-awaited and indefinitely delayed game is now being developed by Ubisoft Montreal after being worked on by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake originally was revealed in September of 2020 with a trailer that showed off the game’s updated art style and features. It showed off cutscenes, voice acting, and even some gameplay. Since then Ubisoft went radio silent on the title with most announcements being the fact that it wouldn’t be shown off at various events, such as E3, throughout 2021.

The Sands of Time remake initially had a release date of January 21, 2021. Soon after that announcement, the title was pushed back once more to March 18, 2021. After that hold-up, the game was given an unspecified delay and with today’s report, it seems that that indefinite delay may last that much longer.

Ubisoft isn’t the only company struggling with a development team switch dilemma on top of an indefinite release. Nintendo’s Metroid Prime 4 is still a sore point for fans as it’s been years since it was first announced and delayed. Like Ubisoft, Nintendo switched the entire development team for Metroid Prime 4, and fans have heard nothing of the game since.

The development process that the teams at Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai reached is unknown, as is why exactly Ubisoft Montreal was brought in to finish the project. Digital Trends reached out to Ubisoft for further comment and will update this article when it responds.

Prince of Persia is getting a Dead Cells-style roguelike next month

The Prince of Persia series’ renaissance is continuing, and I couldn’t be happier.

In January, The Lost Crown rekindled this series' fire after a long hiatus. Now, The Rogue Prince of Persia is continuing to fan those flames. It’s a somewhat out-of-character release for Ubisoft, as it’s a 2D platformer action-roguelike developed by an indie studio outside of the company, and it will initially release into early access. Though it's an atypical release, it's one to get excited about. After going hands-on with it prior to its announcement today, The Rogue Prince of Persia is already a blast.

Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner spills details on the series’ two lost games
An illustration from Replay shows a princess next to an hourglass.

Jordan Mechner can’t stop looking backward -- and that’s not entirely by choice.

The Prince of Persia creator has found himself at the center of an accidental renaissance in the past year thanks to three separate projects lining up at once, some of which he had no hand in. First came Digital Eclipse’s The Making of Karateka, a playable documentary about Mechner’s first hit Apple II game that paved the way for Prince of Persia. That project was followed by Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown this January, a new installment to the series that pays homage to Mechner’s original 2D games. That past-facing stretch now caps off with Replay: Memoir of an Uprooted Family, a new graphic novel by Mechner that looks back on both his career and family history.

Saber Interactive, the game developer and publisher behind highly anticipated upcoming games like the remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, is reportedly being sold by its parent company, Embracer Group.

Bloomberg reports that Saber Interactive will be sold to private investors for "up to $500 million." Saber Interactive has several subsidiaries, including 3D Realms, 4A Games, Aspyr Media, New World Interactive, Tripwire Interactive, and Zen Studios, but it's unclear how many of those it will retain ownership of after being sold at this time as Embracer Group and Saber are declining to comment on the deal. Embracer Group originally acquired Saber in February 2020, and it served as one of the company's primary operating groups.
