We’ve still got to wait a little longer before November’s PlayStation Plus Essential monthly titles become available. For PS Plus subscribers who are looking for something to play but don’t want to spend money on new games like Life is Strange: Double Exposure or Dragon Age: The Veilguard, October’s list of PS Plus Extra game catalog additions was vast enough that there’s still more great stuff there for you to try out. Those are the games I’m recommending you try out this weekend.

Return to Monkey Island

Return to Monkey Island | Gameplay Reveal Trailer

The Monkey Island series of adventure games helped put LucasArts on the map in the 1990s and still stand the test of time as some of the best titles in the genre. In 2022, series creator Ron Gilbert and designer Dave Grossman released a new game in the franchise called Return to Monkey Island. It once again stars pirate Guybrush Threepwood as he clashes with LeChuck while trying to find the secret of Monkey Island. Return to Monkey Island plays well on a controller for a point-and-click adventure game and still sports the classic humor in writing and puzzle design that made the originals iconic.

Two Point Campus

Two Point Campus | Official Announce Trailer

For those who enjoy management games, Two Point Campus is one of the best in the genre. In it, players have to build out and subsequently manage several different college campuses in the fictional Two Point universe. It’s a systems-heavy game with enough to engage dedicated players, but it welcomes players of all kinds with its charming visuals and sense of humor that sees players set up things like “Knight School” rather than night school. Get the hang of how Two Point Campus works, and you’ll find a friendly entry point to an intimidating genre. It will also prepare you for Two Point Museum, which launches next March.

Two Point Campus is available through the PS Plus Extra catalog on PS4 and PS5. It’s also available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed - Now Hiring!

Halloween may have passed, but Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed isn’t a particularly spooky game. Instead, it’s an asymmetrical multiplayer game where four players must work together to hunt down and capture a ghost controlled by another player. While no asymmetrical multiplayer game has been able to dethrone Dead by Daylight, Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is certainly one of the better stabs a well-known film franchise has had at the formula. If you have four friends who are also subscribed to PS Plus, this is a game to check out with them.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed is available to PS4 and PS5 players as part of the PS Plus Extra game catalog. It’s also on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

3 new PS Plus games to check out this weekend (October 25-27)
Key art for Dino Crisis.

Halloween is next week, so you should get in the mood for it by playing some spooky games. Thankfully, several horror titles came to the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog this month. From horror classics for the PS1 and PS2 to newer games with more modern storytelling and choose-your-own-adventure sensibilities, PS Plus subscribers will have a lot to choose from when they're looking for something to play this weekend. These are three newer highlights that fit that bill.
Dino Crisis
State of Play | September 24, 2024 [ENGLISH]

While Resident Evil is Capcom's flagship survival horror game series, it's not the only one they've ever had. There was also Dino Crisis, a horror game that swaps out the zombies for dinosaurs. While this series ended after three games and faded into obscurity, Capcom is finally acknowledging it again with a PS Plus re-release of the first game. I'm happy it did this, as the game is worth revisiting in 2024. If you can get used to its dated tank controls and menu design, you have a really solid and surprisingly cinematic retro horror game that deserves more love than it gets. If you've never tried Dino Crisis before, this Halloween gives you the perfect opportunity to do so. Dino Crisis is available on PS4 and PS5 as part of the PS Plus Premium Classics Catalog.

3 new PS Plus games you should play this weekend (October 18-20)
A zombie crawls toward a player on a boardwalk in Dead Island 2.

It's the middle of the month, so another batch of games just came to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium catalog. There's a solid mix of scary games here just in time for Halloween and hidden gems in the PS4, PS5, and PSVR2's libraries that are well worth your time. If you're wondering what you should play this weekend, I can safely say that you'll have a good time with any of these three games.
Dead Island 2
Dead Island 2 - Extended Gameplay Reveal [4K Official]

It can be hard for zombie games to stand out because so many exist. Dead Island 2 had the benefit of being infamous because it was constantly delayed and shifting developers during development. It finally launched almost seven years after its initial announcement. Despite those development woes, Dambuster Studios and Deep Silver's Dead Island 2 is a surprisingly solid action game. It stands out because of its particularly satisfying melee combat and extraordinarily detailed dismemberment system. Dead Island 2 is a fitting game to play ahead of Halloween and definitely the headliner for October's batch of PS Plus additions.

Issac Clarke exploring ruins in Dead Space Remake.

As we enter the middle of October, Halloween celebrations will only continue to ramp up. That makes this a perfect time to play horror games or games that elicit an eerie, autumn-like vibe despite all of the new releases like Metaphor: ReFantazio and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. Thankfully, several new additions to Sony's subscription service, from PlayStation Plus Essential to Extra, fit that bill. Those are the games I'm drawing from as I recommend three more PS Plus titles for you to check out this weekend.
Dead Space
10 Minutes of Dead Space Remake Gameplay

One of October's PS Plus Essential monthly games is EA Motive's excellent Dead Space remake. It's an utterly gorgeous, faithful recreation of Visceral Games' iconic 2008 sci-fi horror game that's still one of the best-looking games on PlayStation 5. It's a must-play during this spooky season, even if one of the most frightening things about doing so is realizing EA doesn't plan to follow excellent remake up anytime soon. The PS5 version of Dead Space is available to all PS Plus subscribers until November 5. It's also on PC and Xbox Series X/S through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.
