3 new PS Plus games you need to play this weekend (October 11-13)

As we enter the middle of October, Halloween celebrations will only continue to ramp up. That makes this a perfect time to play horror games or games that elicit an eerie, autumn-like vibe despite all of the new releases like Metaphor: ReFantazio and Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero. Thankfully, several new additions to Sony’s subscription service, from PlayStation Plus Essential to Extra, fit that bill. Those are the games I’m drawing from as I recommend three more PS Plus titles for you to check out this weekend.

Dead Space

10 Minutes of Dead Space Remake Gameplay

One of October’s PS Plus Essential monthly games is EA Motive’s excellent Dead Space remake. It’s an utterly gorgeous, faithful recreation of Visceral Games’ iconic 2008 sci-fi horror game that’s still one of the best-looking games on PlayStation 5. It’s a must-play during this spooky season, even if one of the most frightening things about doing so is realizing EA doesn’t plan to follow excellent remake up anytime soon. The PS5 version of Dead Space is available to all PS Plus subscribers until November 5. It’s also on PC and Xbox Series X/S through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

While it’s not a horror game, Night in the Woods oozes fall vibes with its black-cat protagonist, Mae, vibrant autumn-colored visuals, and some narrative and setting elements. It’s an intensely relatable story about a college dropout returning to their hometown, reuniting with old friends, and getting swept up in a supernatural mystery. If you’ve never played this charming indie before, October is the perfect time of year to do so. PS Plus Extra subscribers can now access the PS4 and PS5 versions of Night in the Woods as part of its game catalog. It’s also available on PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and iOS.

Chernobylite

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 might not be released in time for Halloween this year, but you can play Chernobylite at last. Chernobylite has much in common with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as players fight against other humans and more supernatural obstacles and foes around the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone. It specifically leans into the RPG aspects of such an experience, with player choices that interact with the narrative, permadeath for NPCs, and more. The PS4 and PS5 versions of Chernobylite are available via PS Plus Extra. It’s also on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

3 new PlayStation Plus games to play this weekend (February 7-9)

It's the shortest month of the year, but PlayStation is still packing it full of new games joining the PlayStation Plus catalog. The first week is always dedicated to the Essential tier, meaning these games are available to anyone with a subscription. Time is at a premium this month with all the massive upcoming PS5 games, like Monster Hunter Wilds and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, but they aren't here just yet. This weekend, we have a series of games that are perfect holdovers to make the wait for your next giant time investment more bearable. We've got a fantastic co-op game, a shorter game you might be able to beat in a day or two, and a surprising remake you might just fall in love with. If you've got nothing else planned, these are the 3 new PlayStation Plus games you should check out this weekend.
High on Life

Games very rarely attempt to be funny on purpose. Comedy is already incredibly subjective, and because the player has so much control over the pace of a game it makes it almost impossible for every joke to land as it is intended. High on Life comes from Squanch Games and is one of the rare examples of a game that uses the medium of games to its advantage when crafting jokes. It is a brisk first-person shooter set in a sci-fi world where you become an alien bounty hunter welding living weapons called Gatlians that are all voiced by comedians such as J. B. Smove, Tim Robinson, Betsy Sodaro, Jack Black, and many more. If the humor of Rick and Morty doesn't hit for you, it may not do it for you here either, but if it does then you'll have a blast.

3 PlayStation Plus games to play this weekend (January 31-February 2)

As January comes to a close, we have one last weekend of relative downtime before all the upcoming PS5 games in February swoop in. That said, we still need some great games to play without cutting into our budgets. That's where PlayStation Plus comes in. We are in that awkward period between the last batch of Extra and Premium games arriving and the new Essential games for February going live, but there are hundreds of games in the service you might have missed that may have passed you by that are more than worth a weekend of your time. Whether you need something to whet your appetite for Monster Hunter Wilds or a cozy indie game you can complete in a sitting or two, these are the games on PlayStation Plus you should add to your download queue for this weekend.
Sayonara Wild Hearts

Imagine playing through an interactive music video and you will start to get an idea of what Sayonara Wild Hearts is. You will guide your character through vibrant and high-contrast environments with a dream-like aesthetic across an entire tracklist of songs. The gameplay is a blend of rhythm game mechanics where you will need to time button presses, but it is mainly about guiding your character through stages trying to collect hearts to rack up as many points as possible. While you could go for the high scores and secret objectives, you could just as easily vibe out with the game and flow through it like an interactive album in just a sitting or two.

The initial batch of PS Plus games for the Essential tier left many subscribers disappointed with the likes of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League headlining. Thankfully, the second wave of Extra and Premium titles more than makes up for that with some of the best PlayStation 5 games now available as part of the service. The upcoming PS5 games in February are stacked with amazing games, many of which are sequels so we've found the best games you should play this weekend that were just added to PS Plus to prepare for the likes of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector.
God of War: Ragnarok

If you somehow missed one of the biggest games on PS5, you no longer have an excuse. God of War: Ragnarok is the definition of a modern AAA game in every way. The graphics are superb, the gameplay meaty and satisfying, and the story compelling and well-acted across the board. This is said to be the end of the Norse chapter of the series, but sets up plenty of new paths the series could eventually take. Plus, you will also be able to play the amazing free Valhalla DLC to really test your mastery of the combat once the main story is done.
