3 new PS Plus games you should try this weekend (September 20-22)

Sony drops a big batch of new games into the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium Game Catalog around the midpoint of each month. The latest set of games for the subscription service dropped on September 18, and it was a fantastic group of titles. From games that launched right into the service on day one to ones getting PS5 ports right after an appearance in the critically acclaimed Astro Bot, there are plenty of awesome new games to choose from if you’re looking for something to play this weekend on PS Plus. If you need more help narrowing those choices down, I’d recommend these three games in particular.

The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire is a new indie game from All Possible Futures, a studio led by former Pokémon artist James Turner. It’s a love letter to creatives, video games, and the art that inspires people. It plays around with genre a lot. It’ll be a top-down action game like The Legend of Zelda as you venture through a storybook before you’re forcing to jump out of the book and into the real world, where it becomes a 3D platformer. It’s a brisk 6-hour tribute to creativity that honors everything from The Legend of Zelda to Punch Out and Rhythm Heaven, so play through it this weekend if you can. The Plucky Squire is available through PS Plus Extra on PS5. It’s also available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

If you enjoy games that experiment with how storytelling can work within this medium, then you should check out Road 96. It’s a first-person narrative adventure game where you control teenagers trying to escape the authoritarian nation of Petria. On the way to the border, narrative events are presented in a procedurally generated order. They feature narrative choices that impact the broader story or can result in the death of that teenager. It’s a moving narrative experience that makes a lot of bold choices, and your playthrough is bound to not be quite like anyone else’s. The PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalog now includes the PS4 and PS5 versions of Road 96. It’s also on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

Mister Mosquito

Sony Interactive Entertainment

Mister Mosquito made a cameo in Astro Bot earlier this month and is the first of the VIP Bots to get their game on PS Plus in the wake of that release. If you’ve never heard of or played Mister Mosquito before, you’re in for a treat, as it is a thoroughly weird game. In it, you control the titular mosquito, who torments a Japanese family as he tries to suck their blood without being noticed. It’s the kind of odd, off-the-wall game from Japanese developers that we just don’t get much anymore, so it’s great to see it added to Sony’s subscription service. Mister Mosquito is available as part of PlayStation Plus Premium’s Classics Catalog or can be purchased on PS4 or PS5.

3 PlayStation Plus games to play this weekend (January 31-February 2)
sayonara-wild-hearts

As January comes to a close, we have one last weekend of relative downtime before all the upcoming PS5 games in February swoop in. That said, we still need some great games to play without cutting into our budgets. That's where PlayStation Plus comes in. We are in that awkward period between the last batch of Extra and Premium games arriving and the new Essential games for February going live, but there are hundreds of games in the service you might have missed that may have passed you by that are more than worth a weekend of your time. Whether you need something to whet your appetite for Monster Hunter Wilds or a cozy indie game you can complete in a sitting or two, these are the games on PlayStation Plus you should add to your download queue for this weekend.

SAYONARA WILD HEARTS | Launch Trailer

Imagine playing through an interactive music video and you will start to get an idea of what Sayonara Wild Hearts is. You will guide your character through vibrant and high-contrast environments with a dream-like aesthetic across an entire tracklist of songs. The gameplay is a blend of rhythm game mechanics where you will need to time button presses, but it is mainly about guiding your character through stages trying to collect hearts to rack up as many points as possible. While you could go for the high scores and secret objectives, you could just as easily vibe out with the game and flow through it like an interactive album in just a sitting or two.

Kratos looks at the Leviathan Axe.

The initial batch of PS Plus games for the Essential tier left many subscribers disappointed with the likes of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League headlining. Thankfully, the second wave of Extra and Premium titles more than makes up for that with some of the best PlayStation 5 games now available as part of the service. The upcoming PS5 games in February are stacked with amazing games, many of which are sequels so we've found the best games you should play this weekend that were just added to PS Plus to prepare for the likes of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Citizen Sleeper 2: Starward Vector.
God of War: Ragnarok
GOD OF WAR: RAGNAROK - Official Trailer

If you somehow missed one of the biggest games on PS5, you no longer have an excuse. God of War: Ragnarok is the definition of a modern AAA game in every way. The graphics are superb, the gameplay meaty and satisfying, and the story compelling and well-acted across the board. This is said to be the end of the Norse chapter of the series, but sets up plenty of new paths the series could eventually take. Plus, you will also be able to play the amazing free Valhalla DLC to really test your mastery of the combat once the main story is done.

3 PS Plus games you should play this weekend (January 17-19)
Karl Fairburne in Sniper Elite 5.

We're at the tail end of a particularly long gap between new PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog drops. As such, I don't have new games coming to the service to recommend. Instead, I want to spotlight the games you should check out to prepare for some of the first high-profile releases of the year. New games in the Dynasty Warriors, Sniper Elite, and Monster Hunter series will be launching over the next couple of months, and prior entries in each of those franchises are available as part of Sony's gaming subscription service. That's why PS Plus subscribers who are looking forward to these games should use this weekend to play catch-up (if you aren't already checking out Dynasty Warriors: Origins).
Sniper Elite 5
Sniper Elite 5 – Marksman Trailer | PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5

Sniper Elite: Resistance launches on January 30 and serves as a spinoff of Sniper Elite 5. It follows a Special Operations Executive agent helping the French Resistance fight off the encroaching Nazi threat. While it's meant to be standalone, some of the narrative context might not make sense unless you've played Sniper Elite 5. Thankfully, that game is part of the PS Plus game catalog and it's a substantially entertaining game in its own right. There are few things more satisfying in gaming than this series' slow-mo sniper kills. Sniper Elite 5, in particular, excels in making each level feel like a large sandbox with lots of options for completing objectives.
