Redbox takes game rentals nationwide

Media rental service Redbox has been poking at the edges of the game rental business for some time, but the company has now made good on its promise to take the service nationwide: this month, some 21,000 of Rebox’s 27,000 rental kiosks should be offering a range of game titles for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii, with games renting for $2 per day.

Titles available for rental include a selection of games that tie in with recent movie releases as well as popular game titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops, You Don’t Know Jack, Just Dance 2, Red Faction: Armageddon, and the widely-panned Duke Nukem Forever.

Redbox has been experimenting with game rentals since August 2009, when it began offering a small selection of games at a limited number of kiosks as a test run. In October 2010 the company extended the service to 5,000 kiosks, and in April announced plans to extend the service nationwide. At the time, Redbox announced that it had rented more than 1 million video games at its trial locations.

Redbox’s nationwide game rental efforts put the company into direct competition with rent-by-mail services like GameFly, much the same way Redbox’s rental kiosks compete with video rental services like Netflix and Blockbuster.

The streaming service has quietly put together a strong library of titles over the past few years, from certified classics like Hades to strong original games like Laya’s Horizon. Next week, Netflix subscribers can get another charming indie with their subscription: Paper Trail.

Developed by Newfangled Games, Paper Trail is a top-down puzzle adventure about a girl leaving her small town behind to attend university. Her journey isn’t straightforward, though. To achieve her dream, she needs to navigate puzzling forests, proving that she has the brains to tackle the challenges awaiting her on the other side. There’s a unique twist, though: Her world is made up of paper. That gives Paper Trail a tactile gameplay hook that makes it a charming, if light, addition to Netflix’s library.

Netflix subscribers are getting five games, including Sonic Mania Plus

Netflix unveiled the lineup of games it plans to bring to its game catalog over the course of May. The ones that stand out the most are Sega's excellent Sonic Mania Plus and Askiisoft's violently satisfying action game Katana Zero.

Sonic Mania Plus is the definitive 2D Sonic game. Made by fan-game makers turned game developers, Sonic Mania Plus is equal parts a throwback to Sonic's Genesis games and a clever platformer for the modern day. It has been available on PC and consoles for years, but Netflix is finally giving players an official way to play it natively on mobile. Sonic Mania Plus is available through Netflix starting today, May 7.

Every joke possible has already been made about Netflix Games being -- or not being -- "the Netflix of games," so we won't waste your time trying to come up with another one. In the end, Netflix Games is doing its own thing rather than following the lead of other subscription services, and considering that nearly everyone has access to a Netflix account already, there's no barrier to entry for its huge audience to check out its library of games. While Netflix Games continues to build up its content, there already is enough here to induce some choice paralysis, especially if you've never heard of many of the games on offer.
