Capcom’s ‘Resident Evil 7’ will be playable "from beginning to end" with PlayStation VR

Sony unveiled a whopper of a surprise at its E3 press event on Monday: a new Resident Evil title playable from “beginning to end” in virtual reality. Sony chief Shawn Layden announced on stage that Resident Evil 7 Biohazard, the upcoming addition to Capcom’s long-running horror franchise, will be “fully compatible” with Sony’s PlayStation VR headset.

It looks terrifying, frankly. The teaser trailer shows a character from first-person perspective (that of the PlayStation VR headset, presumably) slowly waking from a restless slumber on the floor of a decrepit house. There’s a phone ringing on a table, and on the other end is a voice that issues a terse warning: “If you don’t get out of there, they will kill you.” A walk downstairs leads to encounters with creepy mannequins, a dusty kitchen with rotting food and cockroaches, a ghostly visage of a man disappearing behind a dim corner, and a videotape. And if the cryptic montage that follows is any indication, that’s only the beginning of what’s sure to be a long and twisted ride.

“2016 is a seminal moment in virtual reality,” said Layden. “The time has finally come for everyone to enjoy VR in their own homes, [and] at PlayStation, we have a combination of the necessary processing and graphics power already built inside 40 million PS4s already sold worldwide.”

Resident Evil 7 debuts on January 24. It’s one of more than 50 upcoming titles that’ll be available for PlayStation VR at launch, said Layden.

The setting of Resident Evil 7’s a tad unclear. The series’ last entry, the action-packed Resident Evil 6, followed a diverse cast of characters as they worked to counter an all-consuming bioterrorist attack. It garnered modest praise, but crucially was a commercial hit — it sold 6 million copies, the second most of any Capcom game.

Monday’s demo comes  nearly a year after the E3 2015 debut of Resident Evil 7’s first, slightly more lighthearted teaser. It showed longtime series protagonist Leon S. Kennedy taking down an infected baddie with serious weaponry. But generally, horror seems to be the focus this time around, and Layden said PlayStation is uniquely positioned to help deliver that sort of atmosphere. “Because PlayStation is a fixed platform, developers can fine-tune their games for the system to deliver the same transformative experience for all PlayStation VR owners,” he said.

A playable demo for Resident Evil 7 was made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers Monday evening.

One year later, my PlayStation VR2 is collecting dust
The PlayStation VR2 sits on a table next to Sense controllers.

One year ago, I took my first step into virtual reality with the PlayStation VR2. One year later, I haven't walked much further.

I spent a long time watching the VR sect of the gaming medium from the sidelines, curious about this new form of interaction, but never taking the full plunge. Impressed with the PSVR2’s specs and confident in Sony’s first-party capabilities, I bought it at launch in February 2022. After a week of use, I wrote that I “anticipate it’ll be a very supplemental gaming style for me in the future, not something I’ll want to do for hours every day.”

You can play as Resident Evil 4’s Leon Kennedy in Tekken 8 … sort of
Leon Kennedy in Tekken 8

Tekken 8 has only been out for a few days, but folks on the internet have already found a way to make some incredibly convincing recreations of some of their favorite characters from other properties. Perhaps one of the most impressive seen so far is a version of Leon Kennedy that closely resembles his appearance in the recent Resident Evil 4 remake, giving players an opportunity to enter the King of Iron Fist Tournament as a zombie-slaying brawler ... well, sort of.

As shown by YouTube creator Dan Allen Gaming, it's entirely possible to replicate Leon Kennedy's look to quite a shocking level using Tekken 8's detailed character customization features. Everything from his iconic leather bomber jacket to his quintessential '90s haircut is nailed perfectly here by using popular fighter Lars as a base for the customization due to his similarity to Leon in frame and stature.

PlayStation VR2 just got 2 fun shooters, but I’m still waiting to be wowed
Key art for Firewall Ultra.

For the past six months, PlayStation VR2 players like myself have been yearning for new reasons to boot up our headsets. And after a long wait, the VR platform is getting a much-needed infusion with two brand-new titles. It’s a cause for celebration, but a mild one; neither of PSVR2's latest titles does much to revitalize my shock and awe for the platform six months into its life span.

The two games in question are the exclusive, Sony-published Firewall Ultra from First Contact Entertainment and Crossfire Sierra Squad from Smilegate. Both are realistic-looking military shooters, although they are different in execution. Firewall Ultra is a Rainbow Six Siege-style, squad-based multiplayer game, while Crossfire Sierra Squad taps more into the genre’s arcade roots to create VR shooting galleries.
