Resistance, SOCOM, MAG, and GT5 lose PS3 online play in 2014

Sony has some big titles slated to ditch their online features in 2014, according to the company’s recently updated UK support page, including all three Resistance games, a pair of SOCOMs, big-team online shooter MAG, and Polyphyny Digital’s racing sim, Gran Turismo 5. The online feature shutdown is simply part of the natural order; as games age and online communities flock to newer releases, the cost of maintaining online functionality for older titles outweighs the value of supporting their dwindling communities.

First up are MAG, SOCOM: Confrontation, and SOCOM: Special Forces, all of which will go offline on January 28. Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2, and Resistance 3 follow on March 28 (there’s a Borg/”Resistance is futile” joke here somewhere), and Gran Turismo 5 shuts down on May 20. All of the games’ offline modes will continue to work as they always have, though MAG and the two SOCOM titles are online-only games, so they’re essentially dead come January.

Despite modern consoles like the Nintendo Switch continuing to rise in the charts, the PlayStation 2 is still the highest-selling video game console of all time, with new numbers confirmed Tuesday for the first time.

Sony published a console history on the PlayStation website in celebration of PlayStation's 30th anniversary, and it includes a new sales number for the PS2. This brings the total sales up to 160 million. While Nintendo always seems to be nipping at Sony's heels with the Nintendo DS and Switch, the DS still remains the second-highest-selling console at around 154 million followed immediately by the Switch at around 146 million, according to Nintendo's website.

Developers of games that players have reported look worse on the PlayStation 5 Pro than they do on the PlayStation 5 are looking into the issue.

The PS5 Pro is an advanced version of the base console that's designed to deliver better performance and graphics in games with some refreshed components and proprietary tech. Sony has a list of enhanced games that take advantage of PS5 Pro features like PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for AI-powered upscaling. This essentially offers an additional mode for players who want a higher frame rate without sacrificing image quality. This includes Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Silent Hill 2 remake, two games that have been found to have graphical issues and glitches on the PS5 Pro.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins can change the long-running series forever, and players can check it out ahead of its 2025 release with a new demo out for the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 5 Pro on November 22.

The demo will showcase the Battle of Sishui Gate level, which was what was on display at the Tokyo Game Show earlier this year. However, head of developers Omega Force at Koei Tecmo Games wrote in a PlayStation Blog post that it'll feature new elements to a provide "a more substantial and challenging battle." Players will also be able to choose between various difficulty levels and won't have to deal with any time limits.
