Sonic the Hedgehog is coming back with a new game, TV show, and more

Sega has announced that it’s bringing Sonic the Hedgehog back in multiple ways under the “Sonic Boom” banner, the publisher announced. That includes a new game, toys, and a CG animated series.

Sonic hasn’t exactly been far from the spotlight. He was recently featured in Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and before that in October 2013’s Sonic: Lost World as a Wii U exclusive. Sega, however, is seeing this as a new “multiplatform franchise strategy for” Sonic.

The Sonic Boom franchise will start with a new game, titled Sonic Boom, that will be exclusive to the Nintendo platforms (Wii U and 3DS) and focus on collaborative play. The game will star Sonic and friends, and it is meant to serve as a prequel to the TV series. The game is the third title developed thanks to the partnership between Sega and Nintendo. More games are in development as well.

When it is released, Sonic Boom will be an exclusive to Western audiences, but Japanese teams are working on their own titles.

The TV series will then air on Cartoon Network sometime in 2014 and run through 2015. It will consist of 52 episodes of 11 minutes each. A new line of toys and merchandise will follow.

This new Alien game will tide you over until Alien: Isolation 2
Key art for Alien: Rogue Incursion

It’s hard to believe it has been over a decade since the release of Alien: Isolation. No Alien game since then has matched the intensity of its survival horror focus. Slowly creeping around a space station, only to be ambushed by a Xenomorph and engage in a cat-and-mouse chase in hopes of survival, is an exhilarating experience that no other Alien game has quite been able to achieve. Unfortunately, Sega and Creative Assembly did not immediately start work on a follow-up; it was only this year that we learned a sequel is in the works.

That Alien: Isolation sequel is still years away at this point, but thankfully, a different Alien game is here for players looking for another Xenomorph-filled first-person shooter. It’s a new VR game from Survios called Alien: Rogue Incursion, and it's your best bet for that Alien horror short of replaying the original Alien: Isolation as we wait for its sequel.

Shadow Generations is a master class in confronting grief and moving on
Shadow, with Doom Wing spread out, holds Maria's hands before his final battle with Black Doom in a scene from Sonic X Shadow Generations.

If you had told me as a kid that there would be a sequel to Shadow the Hedgehog nearly 20 years after its release, I would’ve scoffed at you. Shadow already dealt with his past, cured his amnesia in the process, and moved forward with his life. Why put him through that ordeal again? Imagine my surprise when Sonic Team announced Sonic X Shadow Generations, a remaster of Sonic Generations with a new Shadow-focused story added to it, the day before my 30th birthday in February.

The first thing I did when the collection came out was play Shadow Generations, which made sense to me given I already played the Sonic Generations years ago. After playing through the game for more than four hours -- and watching the Dark Beginnings prologue anime weeks prior its release -- I was surprised to find what felt like a true sequel to Shadow the Hedgehog.

A character holds a baseball glove in Backyard Sports.

We have a private investigator to thank for the revival of the Backyard Sports franchise.

This year, Humongous Entertainment's classic series of all-ages sports games for PC came back under the new ownership of Playground Productions. The return kicked off in October with the rerelease of Backyard Baseball ‘97 on Steam, and today we learned more is coming. Playground Productions has confirmed that a brand new Backyard Sports game is in development, that Backyard Soccer ‘98 will come to Steam on November 27, and that it's working to bring the retro titles to more platforms, including mobile.
