Sony’s initial slate of PS4 Pro-compatible games includes ‘Rise of the Tomb Raider’

Sony has announced its initial lineup of games that will benefit from the added processing power and improved display capabilities of its upcoming PlayStation 4 Pro console, including standouts like Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

PlayStation 4 Pro owners will also see performance improvements in upcoming releases like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Days Gone, and Mass Effect: Andromeda.

Sony detailed its many planned hardware improvements for the PlayStation 4 Pro console during a lives-treamed presentation Wednesday, revealing that players can expect a faster GPU, improved processing power, and display capabilities that support high-dynamic range and 4K resolution.

A number of previously issued PlayStation 4 games will be updated to support the PlayStation 4 Pro’s capabilities, including Sony’s downloadable Infamous: Second Son spinoff Infamous: First Light, Warner Bros’ open-world action game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, and Square Enix’s Rise of the Tomb Raider and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Publisher Activision also plans to support the PlayStation 4 Pro at launch with an optimized version of its upcoming first-person shooter Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. Activision will also issue a software update for last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 that will enable faster frame rates on PlayStation 4 Plus consoles.

Many of the PlayStation 4 Pro-compatible titles showcased during today’s event are slated for release in 2017, including BioWare’s spacefaring RPG Mass Effect Andromeda, Guerrilla Games’ sci-fi third-person shooter Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Sony Bend’s zombie apocalypse action game Days Gone.

Sony revealed that it will upgrade “more than half a dozen” first-party games with support for PlayStation 4 Pro-specific features. A number of undisclosed third-party publishers are preparing similar updates for dozens of additional PS4 games, according to Sony.

The PlayStation 4 Pro console will be priced at $400 when it hits retail on November 10.

EA and Respawn Entertainment have revealed that PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will come out on September 17. That means players who only own last-gen consoles will be able to try out this excellent action-adventure game that was previously exclusive to PC and current-gen consoles.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a sequel to 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and continues the story of Cal Kestis, who stumbles upon a new threat connected to the universe's High Republic era. I gave the game a four-star review when it launched in April 2023, writing that "Star Wars Jedi: Survivor still tells a thematically rich, character-driven Jedi tale in one of the most densely packed 3D Metroidvania games I’ve ever played. It’s now the definitive single-player Star Wars experience."

PS Plus is is adding more games than usual to its game library in June. The service will get 14 games, with some rolling out on June 4. That list includes AEW Fight Forever, Tomb Raider: Legend, and five PlayStation VR2 games.

Sony's PS Plus subscription service has been hit-or-miss since its rebrand a few years back. Even a cursory glance at the specs of the PS5 shows that it’s in a different league than the PS4 (and even the PS4 Pro). Sony has improved the capabilities of its platform in every way, adding more efficient storage, faster compute parts, support for larger capacity disks, and support for higher resolutions. We know there are two versions of the PS5 -- the Standard Edition and Digital Edition -- both of which will offer the same specs (with the exception of the omission of a disc drive with the Digital Edition). There's also the new PS5 Pro, but we won't be comparing that to keep things simple.
