Sony unveils new PS5 VR controllers featuring haptic feedback, adaptive triggers

Sony revealed a new set of PS5 controllers that will be compatible with its next-generation of PSVR. The controllers share many features with Sony’s DualSense, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

Sony recently announced that it’s working on a next-gen follow-up to its popular PSVR headset. Back when it was first announced, the company mentioned that it was working on a new set of controllers for the system that would replace the PlayStation Move remotes. The new controllers are a departure from the Wiimote-esque design and more closely resemble the Oculus’ Touch controllers.

Other than the new look, the biggest change is that the controllers feature two of the DualSense’s defining features. Adaptive triggers will add more tension when players press the buttons on the back of the controller, while haptic feedback provides a more detailed rumble.

Sony mentions that the new controller takes a new approach to tracking. “The VR controller is tracked by the new VR headset through a tracking ring across the bottom of the controller,” reads the blog post. Previously the PS Move controllers were tracked by a camera that players would need to place on their TV.

The controllers feature finger touch detection, with Sony saying that the controller “can detect your fingers without any pressing in the areas where you place your thumb, index, or middle fingers.”

As for layout, all of the regular buttons one expects from a PlayStation controller are present, minus a D-pad. Each controller features a joystick, two face buttons, a bumper, and a trigger.

Sony’s PSVR follow-up is currently in development with no release date. The company tells players not to expect it this year.

The PS5 engraving on the console is being aligned with the cutout on the new top cover.

People have a lot of questions about the PlayStation 5 Pro ahead of its launch on November 7. Is it worth $700? How much better will your games look and play? Will your PS5 Slim faceplate match? You'll have to wait for reviews to answer a lot of those questions, but we now have an answer to that last one. Digital Trends can confirm that PS5 Slim covers won't work with the PS5 Pro.

"PS5 console covers are not compatible with PS5 Pro. However, players will be able to swap out different console covers for PS5 Pro when they become available in the future," a PlayStation spokesperson told IGN Thursday.

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered will have way more NPCs thanks to PS5 specs

We already learned a bit about the kinds of changes Guerrilla Games and Nixxes brought to Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, but beyond noting how much more dialogue and mo-cap was recorded, there weren't many specifics. A new PlayStation blog post has gone into more detail about the improvements, including how the teams worked to make the world feel more alive.

Nixxes senior technical game designer Brian van Nunen wrote in the post that one of those ways was to add more NPCs in villages, cities, and outposts, which they were able to do because of the PlayStation 5's more powerful specs. And not only will there be more of them but they'll have more varied schedules and will move around in a more realistic manner.

I took the PS5 Pro for a first test drive. Now I’m a believer
A PS5 Pro that's floating in front of a gray background. It's turned to the side.

At Tokyo Game Show 2024, hundreds of thousands of people gathered to get their eyes and hands on the latest and greatest in interactive entertainment. Digital Trends was there checking out the hottest titles, including Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, and The First Berzerker: Khazan (starring industry darling and class clown Ben Starr).

The largest presence at the event may have been Sony, and it was at its booth that I went hands-on with its newest hardware, the PlayStation 5 Pro, for the first time. I put the console through its paces and came away intrigued after seeing the stellar image quality and smooth action for myself. While it may be pricey, this upgrade may be what finally unlocks the graphical promises of this generation.
