Sony unveils new PlayStation VR2 details and a Horizon VR game

During Sony’s late-night CES showcase, the gaming and tech giant shared new details on its next-gen compatible VR headset. The next iteration of PS VR is officially called the PlayStation VR2. Sony revealed some new specs for the device as well as its first game: Horizon Call of the Mountain, a VR spinoff of Horizon Zero Dawn.

Sony shared multiple new tidbits about the PlayStation VR2 during its show and in a post on the PS Blog. The headset will boast a 4K OLED display that can be set to either 90Hz or 120Hz. For a VR headset, these specs are almost unheard of — for comparison, Valve’s Index uses a 1440 x 1600 LCD display, although it can top out at 144Hz.

The PlayStation VR2 headset will also feature eye tracking, giving players another means of controlling the game by simply moving their eyes. The previously revealed VR controllers, which feature haptic feedback, have an official name, too. Sony has dubbed them Sense controllers, which is in line with the PS5 DualSense naming.

Sony also announced the first game that will be exclusive to PlayStation VR2 — a new entry in the Horizon franchise. Titled Horizon Call of the Mountain, the game is set to be developed by the franchise’s usual developer, Guerrilla, and Firesprite, which Sony acquired just last year.

Despite today’s information dump on the PlayStation VR2 headset, Sony hasn’t announced one important detail: its release date. There’s still no word on whether the headset will, as rumored, release this upcoming holiday season.

As January comes to a close, we have one last weekend of relative downtime before all the upcoming PS5 games in February swoop in. That said, we still need some great games to play without cutting into our budgets. That's where PlayStation Plus comes in. We are in that awkward period between the last batch of Extra and Premium games arriving and the new Essential games for February going live, but there are hundreds of games in the service you might have missed that may have passed you by that are more than worth a weekend of your time. Whether you need something to whet your appetite for Monster Hunter Wilds or a cozy indie game you can complete in a sitting or two, these are the games on PlayStation Plus you should add to your download queue for this weekend.

Imagine playing through an interactive music video and you will start to get an idea of what Sayonara Wild Hearts is. You will guide your character through vibrant and high-contrast environments with a dream-like aesthetic across an entire tracklist of songs. The gameplay is a blend of rhythm game mechanics where you will need to time button presses, but it is mainly about guiding your character through stages trying to collect hearts to rack up as many points as possible. While you could go for the high scores and secret objectives, you could just as easily vibe out with the game and flow through it like an interactive album in just a sitting or two.

What new games we’re playing this weekend (January 31-February 2)

It’s been a long month, but we’ve finally reached January’s end. That marks the end of a slow start to the video game year ahead of the busiest February in recent memory. In just a few weeks, you’ll be able to play Civilization 7, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Rift of the Necrodancer, and more. But before you get to all those, there are still a few neat January releases worth checking out. From the latest entry in the Sniper Elite series to a new Game Pass addition that’s getting buzz, this is what I’ll personally be dipping into this weekend.

Last week, Xbox gave us our first big surprise of 2025 -- and it was a good one. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black revives a 2008 Xbox classic by giving it an Unreal Engine facelift. It’s a bit of an appetizer for Ninja Gaiden 4, which is set to release later this year, so that’s as good an excuse as any to revisit a truly unique action game from a different era. Ninja Gaiden 2 doesn’t play like a modern action game. It’s an unrelentingly difficult game that will kick your butt if you don’t learn how to properly block and counter attacks. While you may find it a bit dated thanks to its unruly camera, it’s a great little blast for the past that’ll remind you of just how distinct action games used to be before studios doubled down on consistent, repeatable formulas.

Did you just get a PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, or PlayStation VR2 for Christmas? If so, you've come to the right place. One of the best things you can do is buy a PlayStation Plus Premium or Extra subscription, as that will give you access to a large catalog of games from every PlayStation platform to check out on your new hardware. As for more specific recommendations, this week I want to highlight some of the hidden gems that were part of December's addition to PS Plus. That includes a Star Wars game that's one of the best PSVR2 titles, an eerie Alien game that you only have another week or so to claim, and an underrated 2023 indie.

One standout launch title for PSVR2 was Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge -- Enhanced Edition. This is a VR game that does a fantastic job of whisking players away and immersing them in various parts of the Star Wars world as a Jedi, bounty hunter, and more. That includes a digital version of Batuu, the planet that Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland and Disney World is based on. It's still one of the best games you can play on PSVR2 and worth checking out for any Star Wars fan. In general, PS Plus Premium's VR game catalog is worth it for anyone who owns Sony's headset. Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is simply the latest cherry on top.
