Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 finally gets its fall release date at Summer Game Fest

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 officially has a release date. During the Summer Game Fest, Insomniac Games revealed that the game is scheduled to release on October 20 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. The stream also featured a few new details about the game, including new information about its villains.

Spider-Man 2 recently appeared at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, so it wasn’t surprising that there wasn’t any new footage at the Summer Game Fest. However, Insomniac presented new concept art, including one with Peter Parker and Miles Morales fighting side by side and another with the two Spider-Mans fighting Venom.

Geoff Keighley talked with Bryan Intihar, the Creative Director at Insomniac Games, about a few new details about the upcoming Spider-Man game. It started with a presentation of the official box art and how it was created with the thought of two Spider-Mans. Keighley then brought up Venom and Kraven as the two main villains, though Intihar confirmed that there would be more in the game.

Intihar spoke briefly about how Kraven differed from many of the other supernatural villains that they featured in past games because his “power” is simply his prowess as the ultimate hunter. He also confirmed that Venom, who isn’t always the same person in the stories, is not an “Eddie Brock” Venom. He sidestepped answering whether or not this Venom was Osborne-related.

“Our goal was to tell an original story, something you haven’t seen in the comics or the movies yet,” Intihar said. He emphasized that “all the things you love about the character will be there,” but who they exactly are might differ from the original story.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch on October 20, 2023, for PlayStation 5.

The best games we played at Summer Game Fest 2024
A warrior faces down a dragon in Phantom Blade Zero.

It's been a long seven days here at Digital Trends. While gaming fans may have had a busy few days thanks to live broadcasts like Xbox Games Showcase and Ubisoft Forward, we were on the ground in Los Angeles for a full week full of hands-on demos and previews. Over that time, we played more games than we can count, from big fall releases like Metaphor: ReFantazio to smaller titles like Bounty Star. The big takeaway? Even if the game industry is currently facing a rocky moment, plenty of developers are still pouring their hearts and souls into making great games.

There's so much that we've already written about already (and so much more coming), but we want to highlight some of the best games we played over the past week. Our picks represent a wide selection of games, from tentpole console exclusives to indies made by one or two developers. Each one is entirely different from the others, showing that passion and creativity are still thriving even in the industry's toughest moment.

An animated Miles Morales swinging around in Marvel's Spider-Man 2 video game

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is getting even more suits, including some designer outfits for both Peter Parker and Miles Morales that will hit the game for free on June 18.

In a PlayStation blog, developer Insomniac Games detailed the eight new suits, four of which were made in partnership with fashion mogul and designer Colm "KidSuper" Dillane and other celebrities. One Miles suit, called the "Metro Suit," is a solo KidSuper effort that also comes with three additional variant colors and a top reminiscent of a puffer jacket.

This surprising Capcom game is the best thing I played at Summer Game Fest
Two warriors in Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.

While Monster Hunter Wilds might not be getting released until next year, Capcom still has another awesome-looking game releasing very soon. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess impressed me with its Summer Game Fest 2024 trailer, and after going hands-on with the game, I'm even more in love. It's a super-weird action strategy game where players free mountain villages of the "Defilement" that has overtaken them by strategically placing helpful villages and fighting the enemies, called "Seethe," head-on.

Think of it as an isometric Onimusha with tower defense elements, as players can strategically command and place villagers to optimally defend the dancing maiden that is helping get rid of the defilement that has overtaken the mountain. Although Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess can be a tough game to explain, after going hands-on with it, the game became my favorite thing I played at Summer Game Fest Play Days this year. After also speaking to the development team to learn more, I think we're all in for something special when Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess launches next month.
