Ubisoft opened up its The Crew Showcase on Tuesday with an important update about the future of the racing franchise. In response to fan outcry after The Crew 1 was rendered unplayable in March, the company promised to keep the current titles playable, even in a future where they get taken offline.

“We want to acknowledge that some of you voiced concern about the access to The Crew games,” Stéphane Beleym, managing studio director on The Crew, said during the presentation. “Today, we want to express our commitment to the future of The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest.”

“We are currently exploring different solutions, and can confirm an offline mode, to ensure long-term access to both titles,” Beley continued, adding that Ubisoft will have more information in the coming months.

Ubisoft Ivory Tower announced that The Crew 1 would be delisted in December. Not only was the 2014 game removed from online stores, but its servers were taken offline on March 31. The company claimed that the decision was due to “upcoming server infrastructure and licensing constraints.” Since the game was online-only, the game basically became unplayable. A group of modders are working to get the game back online and preserved with The Crew Revival, with one telling Eurogamer that the community “should absolutely not let Ubisoft keep getting away with such horrendous practices; otherwise, it will just keep happening to more and more games, including The Crew’s sequels.”

While the developer hasn’t confirmed much just yet, the inclusion of an offline mode for The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest is welcome news in the event they’re also delisted. In related news, Ubisoft also announced that The Crew 2 is on sale for just $1 until September 24.

Most of the showcase was dedicated to The Crew Motorfest Year 2, a gigantic update for the open-world racing game. It’ll have three seasons, with the first, season 5, bringing Maui to the game for free on November 6. Ivory Tower says it’s 50% the size of O’ahu, and players will be able to easily move between the two islands. The game will also be getting new PvE content that’ll be included as part of the Year 2 pass and be accessible to those with the Gold and Ultimate editions. And, per racing game tradition, it’ll also be getting more vehicles.

Escape Academy’s competitive escape room mode is the Mario Kart of puzzle games
A plaza in Escape Academy.

Last year, I fell in love with Escape Academy the moment I first played it. I was instantly smitten by its well-constructed digital escape rooms, which were accessible and intuitive without being too easy. Though I adored the core gameplay loop, the package around it was a little lacking. It was over in a few hours and there wasn’t much reason to go back – there’s no fun in replaying a puzzle box you’ve already solved. Developer Coin Crew Games have worked to remedy those issues in the past year with additional DLC, but its upcoming Tournament of Puzzles DLC feels like the last missing piece.

Escape Academy: Tournament of Puzzles is a free update coming to the game sometime this year, after its second paid DLC launches. It adds a new multiplayer mode to the game, which has two players competing to solve escape rooms. That makes for a tense puzzle race that its developers hope will inspire Mario Kart-style trash-talking. Though the most exciting feature is that rooms will have a procedural element to them, potentially solving the base game’s biggest weakness.

The Crew Motorfest brings a racing festival to Hawaii this year
A car drives down a Hawaiian road in The Crew Motorfest.

Ubisoft Ivory Tower has announced The Crew Motorfest, a new entry in its open-world racing series, and confirmed its plans to release the game later in 2023.
[NA] The Crew Motorfest: Teaser Trailer
The Crew Motorfest is an open-world racing game set on the Hawaiian island of O'ahu. Taking a lot of cues from the Forza Horizon series' premise, Motorfest is centered around the titular festival, which serves as a hub for various races and other driving events and challenges. We only see a little bit of gameplay in the reveal trailer, so it will be interesting to see how this game stacks up against its open-world competitors like Need for Speed Unbound.
If you want to get the chance to play the game early, Ubisoft is holding various closed tests starting tomorrow, February 1. Players can sign up for an Insider Program to potentially get access to early PC builds of the game and provide feedback to the developers. Only 2,000 players will gain access to the first test.

Motorfest's predecessor, The Crew 2, WAS released in 2018 and received lots of post-launch support. Still, it's nice to see Ubisoft move the series forward with a full-fledged sequel. The publisher is coming off a lackluster year that saw Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope underperform and Skull and Bones delayed yet again. Hopefully, Motorfest will be part of a stronger year for Ubisoft, as it also plans to release Assassin's Creed Mirage and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora over the next year.
The Crew Motorfest will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Amazon Luna later this year.
