The Sims 4 is going free-to-play and you can get extras if you bought it already

The base version of The Sims 4 will go free-to-play starting October 18, publisher Electronic Arts announced. This free-to-play version will come to all platforms, including PC (via the EA app, Origin, and Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

In addition, the publisher will host a livestream on October 18 called Behind The Sims Summit, which will feature more details about its future plans for The Sims.

As a “thank you” to players who have purchased the base game already, EA will give all buyers the Desert Luxe Kit, which comes with new luxurious furniture with a Southwest desert theme, from today until October 17. This extra reward is available at no additional cost so long as you have purchased the base game already.

EA promises to continue supporting the game, and says “our team is more dedicated than ever to developing new and meaningful The Sims 4 experiences for our players and we will continue to develop and release packs, kits and Sims Delivery Express drops into the foreseeable future.”

The Sims 4 first launched in 2014 for PC and later came to other platforms with a lengthy list of expansions. As of 2021, the game has reached over 36 million players, but converting it to a free-to-play title will likely attract even more.

The Sims fans are torn on EA’s Project Rene after details leak

EA Maxis is still keeping mostly quiet about Project Rene, an upcoming multiplayer spinoff in The Sims series that we once thought would be The Sims 5, but a recent leak may reveal what it'll look like -- and fans aren't pleased.

A new leak from Reddit user DzXAnt22, who had previously posted visuals and the map from an earlier Project Rene PC build, reveals potential new information on the game, which EA recently said in a recent giant The Sims announcement will be multiplayer-focused.

Project Rene isn’t going to be a proper The Sims 5

Electronic Arts just made a game-changing revelation: Project Rene, long thought to be The Sims 5, won't be a linear sequel to the wildly successful and long-running The Sims 4. The publisher is moving away from sequential releases and will focus instead on expanding the franchise to other games, genres, and platforms.

In a blog post published Tuesday, EA said Project Rene development is "focused on building ways for friends to meet, connect, and share while playing together in an all-new world." This could imply that EA Maxis is testing multiplayer for the first time since The Sims Online, an MMO from 2002 that never reached the heights of its competitors. It also announced that an invite-only, multiplayer-based playtest will be happening this fall through The Sims Labs program.

Astro Bot isn’t on Xbox, but you can play these great platformers on Game Pass
Raz runs on a colorful stage in Psychonauts 2.

Astro Bot is an undeniable win for PlayStation. It's not just a celebration of the brand and many of the franchises that built it into what it is today, but it's also a fantastic 3D platformer that uses the PS5 hardware in creative ways. As a Sony-published game spotlighting the history of the company, it's obviously not on Xbox. In fact, I've seen a lot of people lamenting that Xbox does not have a lot of good platformers in the wake of Astro Bot's well-received launch.

Although it's accurate to say that Xbox doesn't have an exclusive quite like Astro Bot, a few excellent 3D platformers are available on Xbox Game Pass. Many of them are even IP now owned by Microsoft or outright published by Xbox Game Studios. If you have an Xbox console and Game Pass subscription and feel like you're missing out on Astro Bot, consider playing one of these games to make that feeling a little less painful.
