The glory days of mascot-driven action games like Banjo-Kazooie and Crash Bandicoot may be long gone, but after a decade-long rest, PS2-era platformer star Ty the Tasmanian Tiger is due to return in a sequel launching next month for PC platforms via Steam.

Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 4, a new release from series creator Krome Studios, is likely the first of several Ty releases headed to Steam as part of a forthcoming franchise revival.

Originally a series of 3D platformers, the Ty the Tasmanian franchise saw its first release for the Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, and original Xbox in 2002. Sequels followed in 2004 and 2005, and ports for the Game Boy Advance featured 2D, side-scrolling adaptations of their source material.

Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 4 shifts its focus to the 2D formula established in the series’ Game Boy Advance releases. In a similar approach Ubisoft previously took with Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 4 pares down established series conventions for a simplified, fast-paced follow-up.

Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 4 features 40 side-scrolling levels and multiple playable characters in its core Adventure mode. Also included are bonus Time Attack, Turkey Chase, and Danger Arena modes to challenge veteran players.

Krome Studios revealed that PC ports of the first three games in the Ty the Tasmanian Tiger series are up and running, suggesting that Steam releases could follow the launch of Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 4. While Ty’s return is PC-exclusive for now, the team hints that future console releases for the series are in the works, noting that “Steam is hopefully just the next stop on the TY train and not the end of the line.”

Developer Krome Studios has decade-spanning ties to the series, kicking off development of the original Ty the Tasmanian Tiger in 2000 with a team of five people. The team later grew to 45 members at the height of the franchise’s popularity, culminating in the 2005 launch of the previous series entry Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 3.

Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 4 will launch via Steam on September 18.

Frostpunk 2 will come to PC Game Pass when it launches this year
A city in Frostpunk 2.

11bit Studios confirmed that Frostpunk 2 will be released on PC sometime during the first half of 2024 and will be on Game Pass from day one alongside the first full gameplay reveal for the highly anticipated survival city-builder.

The new gameplay trailer for Frostpunk 2 is just over two minutes long and gives the public a first look at the game's city-managing mechanics. Frostpunk 2's gameplay significantly departs from its predecessor in some ways, as it's more focused on the macro management of a city that's survived an apocalypse rather than the micromanaging of resources for basic survival. After getting an extended hands-off look at Frostpunk 2 in action last year, I said it "scales its challenges and gameplay systems up while also holding on to the ethical dilemmas and emphasis on consequences that made the original so great (and depressing.)."

Long-running MOBA Smite is getting an Unreal Engine 5 sequel
A lineup of gods in Smite 2.

Since it first entered open beta in 2013, Hi-Rez Studios' multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game Smite has been a genre mainstay. Smite 2, a full-on sequel to that game, was announced today ahead of 2024's Smite World Championship.

Like its predecessor, Smite 2 will be a MOBA centered around mythology, where teams of five gods work together to take down the opposing team's titan. Some new gods will be introduced to the Smite universe with this sequel, with ranged magic user Hecate being the first one of these revealed. Hi-Rez Studios wants Smite 2 to be a very approachable MOBA, so it'll launch with auto-build and auto-leveling features for new players in matches and be available across PC, consoles, and Steam Deck.

What Payday 3’s devs learned from 10 years of success and microtransaction scandals
Men with masks hold guns in Payday 3.

How do you follow up a game that’s been running for 10 years? That’s a tricky plan that the developers at Starbreeze Studios would have to create and execute with Payday 3.

Launching on September 21, Payday 3 will have the tough task of following up its incredibly successful predecessor Payday 2, a bank-robbing multiplayer classic that’s been a staple on Steam since 2013. With a fresh coat of paint and a move to the more flexible Unreal Engine, it may sound like Starbreeze is poised to pull off the perfect crime. But as with any heist, it’s never as easy as it sounds on paper. There’s a world of difference between 2013 and 2023, especially in the multiplayer landscape. It’s a far more competitive scene; even games by the biggest studios in the world find themselves shutting down within a year. If Starbreeze was going to get its bag, it would need an ironclad plan -- and it has one.
