Microsoft has announced that it will discontinue support for its Xbox Fitness service in 2017, permanently closing off access to its associated Xbox One app and rendering user-purchased content inoperable. Thus far, the company has offered no word on whether refunds would be made to purchasers.
As of this week, the Xbox Fitness app is no longer available for purchase from the Xbox Marketplace, and all downloaded content will cease to function on June 30, 2017.
Launched in 2013, the Xbox Fitness app uses the Xbox One’s Kinect peripheral to assist players in a personalized fitness program. The Kinect camera analyzes player performance throughout a series of included exercises, while the app offers tips regarding form, procedure, and safety.
The Xbox Fitness app was previously available as a free download for Xbox Live Gold subscribers, and players could purchase additional content featuring celebrity trainers including Jillian Michaels and Tony Horton. The app also offered competitive leaderboards, allowing users to compare their progress with friends via Xbox Live.
On December 15 of this year, Xbox Fitness will no longer be available for download as part of the Xbox Live Gold program. Existing users will be able to access the app’s dozens of included free workouts up until the end of the year, and paid content will remain active through June of 2017.
“On July 1, 2017, Xbox Fitness (and all associated content) will no longer be available for download/play,” Microsoft’s Erica Bell announced. “This includes content you’ve purchased. At that time, Xbox Fitness will no longer be available for download from Xbox Marketplace and content will not be available for play from the Xbox Marketplace nor within the game. Xbox Fitness users will no longer be able [to] access Xbox Fitness and the associated workouts/programs.”
Bell continued: “While our team is saddened by this news, we couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished in the past two and a half years. […] We know that many of you have used Xbox Fitness to begin your fitness journey, to supplement it, or as a way to redefine your own fitness story. We’re glad we could be a part of the journey.”
