Formovie, the Chinese projector maker that made a splash a couple of years ago with its excellent Formovie Theater UST projector, today announced that preorders are now open for its new, affordable compact 1080p projector, the adorable $299 Xming Episode One.

Falling under Formovie’s independent sub-brand, Xming, the Episode One should fit in nicely with the portable projector set. Its lightweight and diminutive design — it weighs 2.8 pounds and measures 6.9 by 4.8 by 5.6 inches — makes it great for backyard movie nights.

Inside that small package sits an LED light source that offers 150 CVIA (China Video Industry Association) lumens of brightness, which is roughly equivalent to 122 ANSI lumens, the more common measurement in the U.S. For context, Nebula’s popular Capsule projector beams out 100 ANSI lumens and, while not blisteringly bright, it’s great for most indoor and outdoor movie nights. We’ve reached out to Formovie for a more precise lumen conversion and will update this article when we hear back.

The Xming Episode One is a standard-throw projector with a 1080p resolution image that can be projected from 40- to 120-inches in size, with a throw ratio of 1.2:1. That means for a 40-inch image, the projector should be roughly 41 inches (3.4 feet) from the screen, while a 120-inch image will require around 125 inches (10.4 feet) of distance. Formovie recommends it for use in small to medium-sized rooms.

With auto keystone correction and autofocus, setting up the Episode One should be pretty easy, even if you move it around. And like most new projectors hitting shelves lately, the Episode One runs on the Google TV operating system, which means that you don’t necessarily have to connect an external streaming device to it; it has Netflix already preinstalled and you can add pretty much any streaming service or app available on the Google Play Store. It has Chromecast built-in so you can cast content right from a smartphone or compatible device.

Sound-wise, the Xming Episode One has two 3-watt internal speakers and supports Dolby Atmos when outputted to a compatible system. Speaking of outputs, the Episode One features one HDMI 2.1 input, a USB-A input, and a 3.5 mm analog jack for headphone or a speaker. Wireless connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi support for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

The Xming Episode One projector, while compact, does not feature an internal battery and must be connected with the included AC adapter. This might be a game-changer depending on your portability needs, but for backyard movie lovers this summer, an extension cord is all you’ll need.

We’ve got our hands on an Episode One for review, which will be ready in the coming weeks. In the meantime, for those already interested, the $299 projector is available for preorder starting today. Formovie is offering it at the preorder price of $229 on the Formovie website if you use the code EPPRE.

The Anker Nebula Mars 3 portable projector on a table under a tent.

Anker Innovations (or just Anker) announced today that preorders are open for the latest in its Nebula line of smart projectors, the Mars 3, a $1,100 portable outdoor LED projector with an impressive 1,000 ANSI lumen brightness and a five-hour battery that promises to take summer movie night beyond the backyard.

One of many of the Chinese electronics giant's popular sub-brands (which also includes Soundcore headphones and speakers), Nebula regularly tops many best projector lists, and the Mars 3 should be no different. With a peak brightness of up to 1,000 ANSI lumens, the Mars 3 is twice as bright as its predecessor, the Mars 2 Pro, and the brightest model of its portable projector lineup.

LG debuts two new CineBeam 4K HDR projectors
LG CineBeam HU715Q and HU710P 4K HDR projectors.

LG has unveiled its two most advanced projectors to date. The LG CineBeam HU715Q and HU710P both feature 4K resolution and HDR capabilities with 2,000,000:1 contrast ratios. Both models will be available in the first quarter of 2022, and LG released pricing on February 28.

The HU710P will retail at $2,500. It uses a hybrid laser-LED light source, which LG says doesn't require a color wheel, and can generate up to 2,000 lumens of brightness. The HU715Q, which is a larger, ultra short throw model, uses just laser light and produces up to 2,500 lumens. Both projectors will work in most indoor settings, but LG says they can also be enjoyed outside, after sunset.

Epson’s new 4K laser projector does HDR10+, 120Hz gaming
Epson Pro Cinema LS12000.

Epson has just dropped its newest flagship 4K laser projector and it boasts some impressive specs that will make it a serious contender for fans of big-screen movies and gaming alike. The Epson Pro Cinema LS12000 4K PRO-UHD Laser Projector (model V11HA47020MB) has been priced at $4,999 and can be purchased at the Epson online store and Magnolia and CEDIA dealers.

Five grand is a lot of money, but when you dig into the LS12000's capabilities, it starts to seem a lot more reasonable, especially as you compare to OLED and QLED TVs with the same features. Using a newly designed laser array light source and a three-chip LCD display engine, the LS12000 boasts 2,700 lumens of brightness and can reproduce 100% of the color in an HDR10 video signal, according to Epson. There's also compatibility with HLG and HDR10+ (though not Dolby Vision), and native support for 120Hz refresh rates, along with a claimed input lag time below 20 milliseconds, all of which will make it a very good gaming companion for both consoles and PCs.
