Is Sling TV free with Amazon Prime?

Sling TV.
Phil Nickinson / Digital Trends

Amazon Prime Video is one of the most popular streaming services on the internet, delivering tons of great movies and shows to feast your eyes on. Along with delivering access to live streaming channels, there are plenty of channels and other streaming services that you can access all in one place.

If you’ve ever wondered whether Sling TV is free with an Amazon Prime subscription, we have the answer for you. It is not. And that’s because they are two entirely separate services, each requiring its own subscription.

What is Sling TV?

Here’s the deal: Sling TV is what’s known as a multiplatform video distributor, or MPVD, in industry parlance. You pay a fee every month, and Sling TV gives you access to a bunch of linear channels in return. It’s a bit like cable TV in that way, only via the internet, and you have a little more control over how much you spend every month, and also which channels you end up getting.

Get access to 250 channels, including live sports from the NFL, NBA, NFL, the PGA Tour, and more, instant access to over 36,000 free On Demand titles, with steep discounts available for both new and returning subscribers. Best of all, prices are locked in for two years, so you can wave goodbye to unprecedented price increases. Oh, and did we mention you can watch up to four different sports games at the same time, skip commercials on select primetime shows, and watch and record up to 16 shows at once? Do cable the right way and try Dish today.

And that’s because Sling TV is built on two tracks — Sling Orange, and Sling Blue. Each has its own set of base channels, with a good bit of overlap (and a handful of channels that don’t overlap). Each track is plenty affordable in its own right, and you get both tracks together at a bit of a discount (which is what Sling will strongly encourage you to do). Each track also has its own set of add-ons, called Extras, that allows you to fill out your service with even more channels in even more categories. You’ll just want to mind what you’re spending, because all those add-ons can add up over time.

What is Prime Video?

Then there’s Amazon Prime. Or, rather, Prime Video. The former is the annual subscription from Amazon that gets you all sorts of things, like faster shipping, a good bit of music, and, yes, video. And Amazon Prime Video is the service that has a bunch of movies and series available as part of that subscription, and even more available for rent or purchase. (And that’s in addition to Amazon Prime Video Channels, which is an entirely different ball of wax.)

So in that regard, Sling TV and Amazon Prime Video are somewhat similar. But otherwise, one has nothing to do with the other.

You can find Sling TV in the results if you search for it on Amazon. That’s because Sling TV has an app for devices like Amazon Fire TV, and Amazon Fire tablets. The app itself is free on those platforms. But if you want to watch Sling TV, you’ll need to have a Sling TV subscription. You can, however, still watch Sling Freestream on the Sling app that’s available on Amazon devices. That’s Sling’s free, ad-supported option that doesn’t require a subscription at all. You just fire it up and watch what you want, and in exchange you have to watch the occasional piece of advertising.

And if you want to watch something on Amazon Prime Video, you’ll need an Amazon account.

When it comes to streaming live TV in the U.S., viewers have a number of options to choose from. Sling TV and Fubo are two of them. While they aren't the most popular options in terms of total number of subscribers, they're still well worth considering.

Sling Orange vs. Sling Blue: Which Sling TV package is best?

When it comes to cutting the cord on cable, you've got plenty of options to choose from. Sling TV is as close as you can get to à la carte TV — even though it is also definitely not that. However, it stands out from other live TV streaming services by delivering bundles of channels with plenty of extras.

Sling TV offers two base plans: Sling Orange and Sling Blue. Neither one has the massive channel list that you might see from competitors, but they come at a much more affordable price. With their library of "Extras," you can build out the channels missing from your bundle to get the TV lineup you want, at a price that won't ruin your budget.

Amazon simplifies its lineup with the new Fire TV Stick HD
A promo image of the Amazon Fire TV Stick HD.

It's a little hard to believe we've gone through most of 2024 without a new Amazon Fire TV Stick. That is, until now. The Fire TV Stick HD has been announced, with the $35 device reducing the Fire TV Stick lineup from four to three and in the process replacing the two oldest sticks in the family. The $40 Fire TV Stick and the $30 Fire TV Stick Lite will still be around while they're in stock. But after that, they're gone.

The other two current devices remain the second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K, and the second-gen Fire TV Stick 4K Max, which we still consider to be the best Fire TV Stick to get.
