LG will show off an enormous bendable OLED display at CES 2021

LG Display introduces world’s first 48-inch Bendable Cinematic Sound OLED display
LG will debut the 48-inch bendable OLED display at the virtual CES 2021 event LG

Move over foldable phones: LG is going big for its next bendable display, to be debuted at CES 2021. LG Display will show off the world’s first bendable OLED display in a large 48-inch size.

The screen is designed primarily for gaming, with its curvature intended to increase immersion in gaming experiences. LG says that its OLED technology allows the display to remain paper-thin, but it can also bend and unfold with a curvature of up to 1,000R. That means that the display can bend with a radius of up to 1,000mm. The idea is that it can be left flat for watching movies or TV, when multiple viewers benefit from being able to see the display from any angle, and then curved for playing games, when just one person is the focus of the action and only needs to view the display from one position.

The display will be shown off by LG as only part of what we expect from CES 2021, which will be a virtual event. Instead of the usual in-person event with thousands of companies, journalists, and tech enthusiasts packed into convention centers, this year companies will be hosting online events so everyone can stay home and stay safe from the pandemic. In addition to its curved OLED display, LG will also be showing off its mini-LED TV lineup which should offer more precise backlighting with improved black levels and increased overall brightness.

As for the curved display, it will also come with a feature called Cinematic Sound OLED (CSO), in which the display actually vibrates itself to produce sound without the use of speakers. The company says that this makes seeing a conversation on the screen feel even more real as it mimics the experience of hearing sounds directly from the characters speaking rather than coming from speakers at the side or above or below the screen.

“LG Display’s 48-inch Bendable CSO display is optimized for gaming as it maximizes the use of advanced technology that produces another level in terms of providing an immersive experience. In other words, it offers the very best gaming environment to gamers,” said Dr. Chang-ho Oh, Executive Vice President & Head of the TV Business Unit at LG Display, in a statement.

Samsung shows off the first two 77-inch QD-OLED 4K TVs at CES 2023
Samsung S95C QD-OLED 4K TV.

Samsung was the first company to show off a 4K TV based on QD-OLED technology at CES 2022, and now, at CES 2023 it has unveiled two new QD-OLED models -- the S95C Samsung OLED and S90C Samsung OLED -- and each will be available as 77-inch models. Both will also be offered in 55- and 65-inch sizes.  The news came one day after Samsung Display confirmed it would show its next-gen "QD-OLED 2023" panel at the show in a 77-inch size.

When QD-OLED-based TVs debuted in 2022, Samsung and Sony revealed the first two 4K TVs models within hours of each other: the Samsung S95B and the Sony A95K. Both TVs proved to be absolutely stunning in terms of picture quality, leaving our reviewer no choice but to award them a rare 10/10 rating. But the TVs themselves weren't especially large; only 55- and 65-inch sizes were introduced.

Samsung Display’s QD-OLED TV first look: Best. Picture. Ever.
Samsung QD-OLED display at CES 2022.

I was beginning to think it was the tech unicorn of CES 2022.: A quantum dot OLED display that, by specs and science alone, had the potential to revolutionize TV picture quality. Then I saw it up close, and I'm here to tell you it is the best-looking image I've ever seen from a screen. And not by an incremental margin, either. I hate the term "game-changer," but it absolutely applies here. I couldn't be more excited for this massive leap forward for TVs in 2022.

How I finally came to see Samsung Display's QD-OLED (important note: This is not a consumer television from Samsung Electronics) is an adventurous tale unto its own, and one best left for another story. Here, I want to focus on what I saw and why I am convinced that this latest adaptation to OLED display technology is the most exciting thing I've seen since the introduction of HDR TVs.
