This slanted surfboard just may be Google’s next TV streamer

The purported Google TV Streamer device.

The follow-up to the venerable (if awkwardly named) Chromecast with Google TV is, apparently, whatever this is.

In a handful of images shared with 9to5 Google, we see a device that looks more like a wireless charging pad than anything you’d plug into your TV. But there it is alongside the same sort of remote that comes with the current Chromecast with Google TV. There are two cables running from the rear of the device — we don’t get to see it from the back — but suffice it to say that those should be for power and HDMI. The device looks thick enough to possibly house Ethernet, but I wouldn’t bet on that.

The name of the device purportedly is Google TV Streamer, which would follow Google’s standard practice of clunky names.

The remote control is pretty unassuming. The funky legacy Google Assistant logo is gone — back to a pretty standard microphone icon — and swaps places with a gray home button. There are branded buttons for YouTube and Netflix. I’d put money on the YouTube button having the same behavior as the Onn 4K Pro in that it can launch YouTube TV by default, if you want. There’s also a power button in the same spot, as well as a star button, which likely works the same as on the Onn 4K Pro, too, either for launching apps or changing inputs.

All told, there’s not a lot to go on just yet. There’s got to be more to that new design, though. It could just be for newer internals that require more space. Or something else entirely. Just don’t call it a set-top box. For one, it’s not a box. And for another, it’s been years (decades?) since anyone’s bought a TV thick enough for something like this to sit atop.

Google has an event scheduled for August 13 in Mountain View, California — chances are we’ll see this thing emerge then.

Don’t throw out that old Chromecast with Google TV just yet
Chromecast with Google TV.

If one thing is apparent from the announcement of the new Google TV Streamer -- whose name is right down there with the Onn 4K Streaming Device -- it’s this: I’m not going to be getting rid of my old Chromecast with Google TV anytime soon. Especially now that Google has announced it's not going to make anymore.

And that’s despite the fact that Google says its new streamer is better in so many ways and that it’s the best Google TV device. And, yeah, it might well be, with a faster processor and four times more storage. And with support for the Thread and Matter smartphone standards. And with Ethernet. And an improved remote. And Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, with spatial audio if you’re using Pixel Buds.

The Google TV Streamer added one feature that all such devices need
The rear of the Google TV Streamer device.

When a company drops a handful of press images alongside the announcement of a new product, we rarely get to see the back of the thing. And I get it — there's nothing particularly photogenic about a bunch of ports and cords. And that's mostly true of the new Google TV Streamer, which looks more like a router than it does a successor to the venerable Chromecast dongle.

But we did get the briefest glimpse of the rear of the device in Google's promo video. In it, you see the USB-C power cable and a hint of the Ethernet port. And those are great.

Chromecast now has a place in the Google Graveyard
The Chromecast with Google TV (left) and the Chromecast Ultra.

To be fair, Chromecast has lasted longer than a good number of other products from Google. And it's easy to understate just how important -- if unassuming -- a product it's been. But now, after 11 years, Chromecast has earned a plot in the Google Graveyard.

Google itself announced the death of the nearly 4-year-old Chromecast with Google TV, and with it, the entire Chromecast line, as it announced Google TV Streamer. "After 11 years and over 100 million devices sold," VP of engineering Majd Bakar wrote, "we're ending production of Chromecast, which will now only be available while supplies last."
