YouTube Premium and YouTube Music are now more expensive, too

YouTube Premium on iPhone.

Get ready to pay a little more for a couple of Google’s streaming options. As spotted by 9to5 Google, YouTube Premium — the add-on that (among other things) gets rid of advertising on YouTube — is now $2 more expensive each month, landing at $14. The annual subscription rate also is going up to $140, an increase of $20.

Meanwhile, the standalone subscription to YouTube Music (which you get for free if you sign up for YouTube Premium) is increasing by a dollar to $11 a month. That brings it in line with Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Tidal. Spotify now undercuts them all by that single dollar.

If there’s any good news here, it’s that the cost of a family subscription to YouTube Premium isn’t going up again. On the other hand, it did increase by $5 in October 2022 and stands at $23 a month. At the time, that price increase was attributed to “allow us to develop even more Premium features and continue to support the creators and artists you watch on YouTube.”

There’s also the fact that you can still get a full one-month free trial to YouTube Premium. That’ll let you kick the tires of the aforementioned ad-free experience, as well as play videos in the background, and save them for offline viewing. And those using YouTube on iOS still get a little added sweetener of 1080p videos at a higher bitrate than before, so there’s that.

Really, though, YouTube Premium is all about getting rid of advertising. That — and the inclusion of YouTube Music — is why most folks will be taking a look at it. But it’s also the latest in a long, continuous line of streaming price increases. So now’s as good a time as any to audit what you’re spending and see if it’s time to cut back.

YouTube TV prices are going up again in 2025
YouTube TV on Roku.

"Nothing is certain except death and taxes," Benjamin Franklin apparently said in 1789. If he were alive today, he may very well have added, "... and streaming subscription price increases." Yes, that's my way of saying that -- despite reports to the contrary -- YouTube TV is jacking the price of its base subscription by $10 per month starting January 13, 2025, according to the following email sent to customers on December 12:
YouTube TV has always worked hard to offer you the content you love, delivered the way you want, with features that make it easy to enjoy the best of live TV.

‌To keep up with the rising cost of content and the investments we make in the quality of our service, we’re updating our monthly price from $72.99/month to $82.99/month starting January 13, 2025.

5 great free action movies you should stream right now
Nick Cage signals fighter jets in The Rock.

Who doesn't love free movies? Besides the major streamers, of course. There just aren't any free options anymore on Netflix and Hulu. However, a number of free action movies can be found on sites like YouTube and Tubi. YouTube, in particular, doesn't advertise its free movies every month, so you'll have to know where to look to find them.
Surprisingly, two of our picks from last month's free action movies are still available to watch in March, So we've added three more free action movies for your viewing enjoyment. And all three of our picks are legitimately great action movies in their own right.
If you're curious about what's available in action on other streaming services, we also have guides for the best action movies on Netflix, the best action movies on Hulu, as well as the best action movies on Amazon Prime Video. For more options, check out guides for the best new movies to stream and the best movies on Amazon Prime Video.
The Rock (1996)

The Rock may not be the greatest action movie of the 1990s, but it's definitely the most '90s action movie. It's a Michael Bay film — need I say more? Brigadier General Francis X. Hummel (Ed Harris) has gone rogue with some of his most loyal men by stealing deadly gas, obtaining missiles, and seizing control of Alcatraz with hostages to force the federal government to give them what they want.
Two men are specifically selected to go on a mission to take out the missiles and the gas: Dr. Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage) and James Bond-adjacent former secret agent John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery), who has languished in a US prison for decades. Because Mason is the only living man who ever escaped from Alcatraz, he can get Goodspeed and the soldiers inside. But can Mason trust the FBI to follow through on his pardon? On the flip side, the FBI trust Mason not to run off and leave them high and dry before the missiles are launched?
