Voice assistant-enabled Deebot N79S robot vacuum cleans up competition

Voice assistant-enabled Deebot N79S robot vacuum now deeply discounted

When your older sibling was one of the best-selling robot vacuum cleaners on Amazon, you have big shoes to fill. Luckily, the latest automated cleaning contraption from Ecovacs has been more than up to the challenge. The Chinese company has given the original robotic vacuum cleaning team at Roomba quite the run for its money, and now, it’s heating up the competition once again. The Deebot N79S, the follow-up to the wildly successful Deebot N79 and a best-seller in its own right, has slashed its price to $150 on Amazon. Fulfilling its promise to make cleaning easier than ever, this Alexa-enabled bot will clean your home on your behalf — all you need to do is say the word.

With more than 1,400 customer reviews on Amazon, the Deebot N79S is an Amazon’s Choice robot vac and scored a spot as one of Digital Trends Best Robot Vacuums of 2018. It features many of the same attributes as the previous model, like smartphone app controls, smart motion navigation, and anti-collision and drop sensors. But the main difference will lie in its smart assistant compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

With a single voice command to Alexa, you can now send your robot on a cleaning spree. It also promises strong suction, with 1,000 pascals worth of cleaning power. There are four different cleaning modes capable of tackling various surfaces — if you need general cleaning, go for Auto mode. The Single Room option will address just one room at a time, whereas the Edge mode will focus on those hard to reach corners. Finally, Spot cleaning will help you get out tough stains.

The vacuum also charges automatically, so you don’t have to guide it back to its power dock. In case the device gets stuck in a tricky spot, it will send you a smartphone alert so you can rescue it via the Wi-Fi remote control.

The N79S is also lighter than its predecessor, so if you do find yourself manually moving the bot around, it shouldn’t cause you to break a sweat. In addition to controlling the N79S with voice commands, you can also use the companion app to control your bot’s motion. With the press of a button in the app (from wherever you are in the world), you can take advantage of the robot’s strong suction power to clean hardwood floors, low-pile carpets, and everything in between. You also can use the app to schedule cleanings, so you always have a tidy home.

The Deebot N79S made its debut on Amazon in March with great success, where its nominal $300 list price has an average $225 discounted price. With today’s low $150 deal price, the second-generation Deebot robot vac will likely be cleaning many more homes in the post-holiday season.

Updated December 14, 2018: Added information about N79S’ popularity and extra low price deal.

How to clean the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Combo
Ecovacs X2 Combo under a bed.

While the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Combo handles most of its own maintenance, there are still a few tasks you'll have to perform manually. Thankfully, these tasks only take up a few minutes of your time, and they don't need to be carried out frequently. From checking that the robot's sensors aren't blocked to cleaning roller brushes and the dirty water tank, here's a look at how to clean the Ecovacs Deebot X2 Combo.
Wipe down the robot vacuum sensors

The robot vacuum that comes with your X2 Combo works best when its external sensors are clean. After scurrying around a dirty house, there's a good chance dust has accumulated on the clear cover that houses all its sensors. Check this after each cleaning cycle and wipe it down with a dry cloth. If it's really dirty, a slightly damp rag can be used before drying it with a towel.
Give a thorough rinse to the dirty water tank
Emptying the dirty water tank is arguably the worst part of owning a robot vacuum. But if you're staying on top of things, it should never get too funky. Consider emptying the dirty water tank before it's full and giving its interior walls a good scrubbing to remove buildup. If you don’t do this, your dirty water tank will get remarkably smelly and slowly accumulate more gunk.
