Your Android 10 smartphone may not be able to call 911 if you use Microsoft Teams

Two weeks ago, a Google Pixel 3 user made a Reddit post detailing a potentially critical bug that prevented him from making a 911 call. Now, Google confirmed that they were able to reproduce the issue on “a small number of devices,” implying that the problem is more widespread than initially thought.

Google’s investigation revealed that the issue only manifests if users install Microsoft Teams on devices running Android 10 and above. Also, the issue seemingly occurs when users have installed Microsoft Teams but have chosen not to log in. The company blamed the issue on an “unintended interaction between the Microsoft Teams app and the underlying Android operating system” while adding that they are working with Microsoft to issue a fix.

The Reddit user first noticed the issue when he attempted to dial 911 after his grandmother appeared to be having a stroke. Instead of connecting the call, the emergency call menu froze and stopped reacting to his touch inputs. The phone also sent him a notification stating that it had shared his location with emergency services.

Since he was unable to complete the call, he wasn’t able to speak to an emergency operator — and could not tell him his exact address. He would later find out that the phone did not actually share his location with emergency services and that there was no record of a 911 call on his call log or his carrier call log (Verizon). During the failed 911 call, he noted that the phone was able to access other apps with the emergency call menu running in the background. The phone also had no issues making standard non-emergency calls.

Because it will be a few days before Google and Microsoft release a patch to fix this issue, Google suggests users make sure that they are logged in to Microsoft Teams on their phones running Android 10 and above. If you have already downloaded Microsoft Teams but haven’t logged in yet, it is advisable to uninstall and reinstall a new version of the app from the Google Play Store and then log in. Google also indicated that a fix for this issue might arrive via an Android platform update scheduled for January 4.

Google Gemini is about to get a lot more useful on your Android phone
Google Gemini app on the Motorola Razr Plus 2024.

Google isn’t planning on hitting the breaks on Gemini anytime soon. After first teasing a number of new extensions during Google I/O 2024, a recent APK teardown from Android Authority has revealed a ton of unannounced, useful new features from Gemini that are soon coming to your Android phone. Gemini is expected to get a variety of new extensions that will allow integration into Google services like Keep, Tasks, and Calendar.

Each of the extensions seems to provide useful features, and Android Authority has demo videos showcasing each. With Google Keep, you can now ask Gemini to create new notes and lists, add information to notes, and add or remove items from lists. Google Tasks now lets you use Gemini to create new tasks, including reminders. It’ll also allow you to view existing tasks and show their due dates.

The Google Pixel 9 may not have the Android version you expected
Official teaser of the Google Pixel 9 Pro.

Google’s holding its next big event on August 13, where we expect to see the new Google Pixel 9 lineup, including the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and other goodies. But Google may end up doing something very odd, considering the timing of the event. The Pixel 9 series may not ship with Android 15, breaking a longstanding tradition.

In the past several years, Google has always launched the newest Pixel phone with the newest version of Android, which only makes sense considering Google creates both the hardware and software. In 2021, the Pixel 6 series launched with Android 12. Then, the Pixel 7 launched with Android 13, and last year, the Pixel 8 launched with Android 14.

The Google Pixel 8a may not get one of Android 15’s coolest features
The back of the Google Pixel 8a.

One of the most highly anticipated new features in Android 15 may not be available on the recently launched Google Pixel 8a. If true, it's bad news for anyone who just purchased Google's newest budget handset.

Android Authority reports that the least expensive Pixel 8 model will not support the Auracast feature in Android 15. This feature allows users to share their phone’s audio with multiple Bluetooth devices — making it a lot easier to share a song or video with friends/family without disturbing other people around you.
