Apple just did something amazing to the iPad

Apple’s “Let Loose” event just wrapped up, and as expected, there was a lot of iPad news. Just like the rumors suggested, Apple gave us pretty significant overhauls for the new 2024 iPad Air and 2024 iPad Pro. But there was another iPad-related announcement that I didn’t expect — and it’s the one I’m most excited about.

At the end of its event, Apple announced that the 10th-generation iPad will now be available for just $349. For context, Apple originally launched the 10th-gen iPad in October 2022 for $449. A $100 price cut is nothing to sneeze at, and if you ask me, it completely changes the positioning of this particular iPad.

When the iPad 10th gen was released, it was a confusing product. Objectively, it was a very good piece of hardware — and it still is today! The A14 Bionic chipset is powerful for casual day-to-day use, the 10.9-inch LCD panel looks perfectly fine, and the overall hardware design is a massive upgrade over the iPad 9th gen. But at $449, it was always in an awkward middle ground between the $599 iPad Air and the $329 iPad 9th gen.

But that’s no longer a problem. At its new $349 price, the iPad 10th gen is now significantly cheaper than the iPad Air, so it can actually be considered a good value. And with Apple quietly discontinuing the iPad 9th gen, the 10th-generation model is now the default choice for the cheapest iPad you can buy.

If you ask me, this is all incredible news. Although this means the cheapest available iPad is now $20 more expensive than before, the iPad 10th gen is an incredible piece of kit for $349. It’s now the iPad to buy if you don’t want to break the bank, and if you’re in the market for any sort of tablet, it’s difficult to recommend this over another similarly priced option.

The new $349 price for the iPad 10th gen is in effect now.

Things still aren’t looking good for Apple’s iOS 19 update
iPhone 16 Pro Max in Desert Titanium.

The latest version of iOS 18.2 rolled out to (most) iPhone users yesterday, and it brought with it a slew of new features that fans have eagerly waited for. These include Visual Intelligence for iPhone 16, Genmoji, and Image Playground. However, this slower rollout of iOS 18 features is having an impact on development times for its next iteration, and that means iOS 19 might be delayed.

There have been whispers of delays before, so this doesn't come as a huge surprise — particularly when you think about how the production flow at Apple usually goes. In a Threads post, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said: "I continue to hear that the gradual rollout of features across iOS 18 to iOS 18.4 is leading to delays of some features scheduled for iOS 19. That will lead to a long-term rollout of features next cycle as well. Engineers are stuck working on iOS 18 projects when they’d usually already be on to the following OS."

If you have an iPhone 16 Pro or iPhone 16 Pro Max, updated to iOS 18.2, and regularly use the Voice Memos app, then your phone just got even better if you're a musician. Originally teased in September’s iPhone 16 event, Layered Recordings is now available in the Voice Memos app with the iOS 18.2 update.

What exactly are Layered Recordings? Basically, you can now add a vocal track layer on top of any existing instrumental recording without the need for headphones. In the iOS 18.2 update, users are now able to play original instrument ideas through the iPhone’s built-in speakers while simultaneously recording vocals with the studio-quality microphone on the iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max.

Apple has started the public rollout of iOS 18.2 and the corresponding iPadOS update, and they bring a handful of long-awaited features in its AI kit. The release notes are pretty exhaustive, and they reveal a few features that are minor improvements to the already available Apple Intelligence bundle.

The most notable addition is ChatGPT integration with Siri, which shifts things over to the OpenAI chatbot if Apple’s assistant can’t provide an answer. ChatGPT integration is also expanding within the Writing Tools set, thanks to the compose feature that lets users create fresh content and generate images.
