The 10 biggest GIF moments of 2018, according to Google’s Tenor

Sometimes the most succinct way to comment on the big events of the day is by posting a GIF, and we collectively shared billions of them in 2018. Tenor, one of the biggest GIF search engines in the world, has revealed a rundown of the top 10 GIF moments from the last 12 months. These were the days, outside of holidays, with the highest levels of GIF share activity. We’ve got the dates in question, along with the top trending search term and a popular related GIF for each one.

Founded in 2014, Tenor was acquired by Google back in March. With more than 300 million users worldwide, Tenor powers GIF search in some of the biggest apps around including WhatsApp, Twitter, iMessage, Facebook Messenger, Gboard, and many others. There are more than 12 billion GIF searches on the platform in an average month, but searches spike around news that captures the public imagination. Let’s take a look back at the events that sent us in search of GIFs in 2018.

Future Android phones may come with another preinstalled Google app

If you have an Android phone, you know it comes with many preinstalled Google apps, such as Gmail, YouTube, and Google Maps. In future Android versions, another Google app might be automatically added to the mix.

As 9to5Google first noted, the Oppo Find X8 has Google’s Fitbit app preloaded on the device. It’s now part of Google’s Android app suite on that handset and replaces Google Fit. The site suggests, and probably rightly so, that more Android-based devices will also probably ship with Fitbit preinstalled in the future.

Google Gemini arrives on iPhone as a native app

Google announced Thursday that it has released a new native Gemini app for iOS that will give iPhone users free, direct access to the chatbot without the need for a mobile web browser.

The Gemini mobile app has been available for Android since February, when the platform transitioned from the older Bard branding. However, iOS users could only access the AI on their phones through either the mobile Google app or via a web browser. This new app provides a more streamlined means of chatting with the bot as well as a host of new (to iOS) features.
