Crazy stretchy screen could kill the crease we all hate

A demonstration of LG's stretchable screen technology.

The advancement of technology is an inexorable tide that halts for no one, but amid changes that often bring only basic changes are a few that make our jaw drop. We’ve seen folding screens already, and rollable screens are on their way, but what about screens that stretch?

LG Display has showed off an amazing screen that is normally 12-inches in size, but can be stretched out to 18 inches without damage. And as it bends and curves, there’s no crease in sight. A crease in the screen has been considered an eyesore on folding phones since they arrived, but a stretchable screen could make them a thing of the past.

While this technology’s use in phones immediately comes to mind, LG showed it working as part of a car’s dashboard and on items of clothing. We can also envision it being used to create wraparound screens on smartwatches and other wearables.  It’s not the first time LG has spent time bending and stretching screens either. In 2018, LG debuted a 65-inch TV that could roll up like a poster, and before it left the mobile world, it was working on a concept rollable phone. In 2022, it demonstrated a similar stretchable display, but it could only stretch up to 120% of its original size. This new version can reach 150% without distorting the image.

The technology is new and exciting, but we still have a long way to go before it’s readily available to everyone. LG is off to a good start with this prototype, though. It can be stretched and released more than 10,000 times and is powered by microLEDs as small as 40 micrometers in size. To put that in perspective, the average human hair is somewhere around 70 micrometers in width. There’s plenty of potential for this kind of display, and we’re eager to see how it changes in the future, and where it may make its first real-world appearance.

Latest watchOS 11.4 update will make it easier for you to get out of bed
The Ray-Ban Meta smartglasses, Apple Watch Series 10, and Oura Ring 4 on a table.

Every fall, Apple drops a number of major software updates for its devices, with last year seeing the arrival of iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11 and macOS 15 Sequoia. We then get smaller updates to these software builds as the months progress with some of those introducing big features that maybe weren't ready when the main software dropped, while others are merely bug fixes.

This week saw the release of iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 but while watchOS would usually have dropped at the same time – in this case watchOS 11.4 - it was notably missing. Still, there's good news in that it is here now, and with it come a couple of new features one of which is especially good for those of you who need an extra kick to get out of bed in the morning.

Samsung pumps up the Galaxy A56 to make new Galaxy Tab S10 FE tablets
A press image of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE.

Samsung has announced two new tablets, the Galaxy Tab S10 FE and Galaxy Tab S10 FE+, which bring together the power and AI features found in its Galaxy A56 smartphone with the big screen options provided by its Galaxy Tab S10 series tablets. Confused as to what Samsung means by FE? The name came about in an unusual way, but is now applied to affordable devices which provide good value, such as the Galaxy S24 FE.

What about the two new Tab S10 FE models? There are two primary technical differences between the two new models. The Galaxy Tab S10 FE has a 10.9-inch, 90Hz LCD screen and an 8,000mAh battery, while the Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ has a 13.1-inch, 90Hz LCD screen and a 10,090mAh battery. Obviously this makes the Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ larger and heavier — it’s 664 grams rather than 497 grams — but both measure just 6mm thick.
