FDA clears first-ever smartphone app for insulin delivery

People with diabetes will have an easier time getting insulin into their bodies with just one tap on their phone. The Food and Drug Administration has cleared the first-ever smartphone app developed by Tandem Diabetes Care to program insulin dosage for its t:slim X2 insulin pump users.

Tandem Diabetes Care, a leading insulin delivery and diabetes technology company, based in California, made the historic announcement on Wednesday, saying that its app is the first app for both Android and iOS capable of delivering insulin from a smartphone. Insulin delivery previously had to be conducted from the pump alone.

John Sheridan, president and CEO of Tandem Diabetes Care, said in a statement that the insulin delivery app is one of the most requested features from the diabetes community, and the FDA clearance validated the company’s commitment to innovating diabetes management tools for people who need more efficient ways of keeping their blood glucose levels in check. With to the update, pump users can program or cancel their bolus doses, which they normally have to take during mealtimes.

“With the improvements in diabetes management provided by Tandem’s Control-IQ technology, giving a meal bolus is now the most common reason a person interacts with their pump, and the ability to do so using a smartphone app offers a convenient and discrete solution,” Sheridan said.

The bolus dose delivery app may prove useful to people who are already uncomfortable with having their pumps out in public settings like restaurants or sticking them to undergarments. The t:connect app already shows users their blood sugar patterns and insulin dosage history, as well as any alarms and alerts they may have missed, so the updated app gives them the opportunity to administer insulin doses as discreetly as possible.

The last piece of diabetes management tech that did something similar was the glucose monitoring smartwatch by Monavo. It’s a needle-free wearable device equipped with A.I., machine-learning capabilities, and the cloud that allows users to check their real-time glucose levels whenever it is most convenient to them.

Tandem Diabetes Care said that it plans to roll out the bolus app update to select users throughout the spring, followed by a wider launch later this summer. Once the app is officially released, it will be offered to new t:slim X2 insulin pump users and to in-warranty customers through a remote software update for the pump and the updated t:connect app at no additional cost.

This could be your last chance to get an Oura Ring Gen 3 Heritage for just $199
A man wears an Oura Ring Gen3 while drinking coffee at a cafe.

The Oura Ring Gen 3 Heritage is technically a previous generation Oura Ring, but the tech isn't moving so fast that we think you'll necessarily notice. And, right now, it has one of its best prices on Amazon, at just $199. The ring is in a sort of fluctuation of prices this month, bouncing between regular and deal prices, which potentially signals the end of the deal. In any event, this is an excellent way to get an affordable fitness tracker that has a battery that can last all week. The Oura Ring Gen 3 Heritage is down to $199 from $249, a savings of $50. It's also worth noting that its original retail was $299, so this is (in many ways) a savings of $100. Again, this deal could be blinking out of existence at any time, so if you want to make sure to get it, tap the button below. Then, keep reading to see what makes the Heritage special.

Why you should buy an Oura Ring Gen 3 Heritage
Oura Rings give you the advantages of fitness tracking without the disadvantage of taking your wrist out of play for a traditional watch. They also don't have a screen to obsess over, tracking your stats more passively and giving you a less obsessive need to check in at all moments. The Oura Ring Gen 3 Heritage tracks everything from your heart rate to your sleeping patterns, gives women period tracking insights, has a 5-7 day battery life, and is water-resistant up to 100 meters. This is an unobtrusive piece of tech that lets you, more or less, set it and forget it in everyday life.

Apple is hoping your emails will fix its misfiring AI
Categories in Apple Mail app.

Apple’s AI efforts haven’t made the same kind of impact as Google’s Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, or OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The company’s AI stack, dubbed Apple Intelligence, hasn’t moved the functional needle for iPhone and Mac users, even triggering an internal management crisis at the company.

It seems user data could rescue the sinking ship. Earlier today, the company published a Machine Learning research paper that details a new approach to train its onboard AI using data stored on your iPhone, starting with emails. These emails will be used to improve features such as email summarization and Writing Tools.

Honor has announced a bunch of AI-powered updates as part of a partnership with Google Cloud. The highlights include AI Outpainting, an AI eraser, and a teaser about its upcoming product line that's set to launch next month.

Of all the announcements, AI Outpainting seems like the biggest deal. This is a tool that's similar to Photoshop's Generative Expand, and it should make framing your photos the correct way a less stressful affair, all because AI can always fill in the blanks.
