Fossil’s first Wear OS 3 smartwatch looks like a better (and cheaper) Pixel Watch

Fossil today launched the Fossil Gen 6 Wellness Edition, its first Wear OS 3 watch. It’s a minor update on something we’ve already seen before, with the major non-aesthetic updates here being driven by the Fossil Wellness app.

The Fossil Gen 6 is reasonably powerful. It’s got a Snapdragon 4100+, 1 GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and a 1,3-inch AMOLED display — all wrapped in a 44mm chassis. The connectivity specs are here, with Bluetooth 5.0 and all the usual suspects. There’s 3ATM water resistance and sensors for your heart rate and blood oxygen saturation. These all play with the Wellness App and allow you to keep track of your vitals while exercising, sleeping, and passively. Fast charging is also included here, and it’ll take your battery to 80% capacity in 30 minutes as with other Fossil watches.

It’s powered by Wear OS 3, though Android Central reports it won’t come with Google Assistant support. Rather, users will have to make do with Alexa on their wrists.

The Fossil Gen 6 Wellness Edition is a sleek-looking watch that looks very much like a watch. The crowns on the side help drive that point in, as well as its watch faces. It’s no Pixel Watch with its predominantly digital interface, but it’s not aiming to be. Fossil has carved out a brand identity all its own, it doesn’t need to be something different.

If you’re thinking the Fossil Gen 6 may sound familiar, that’s because it should. The company launched a Gen 6 smartwatch last year with an older version of Wear OS (and another variant this year). A lot of what is here returns, so you’re really only buying this for an updated design and better fitness tracking. If you want to save money and go for older, that smartwatch and other Fossil watches will see updates to Wear OS 3 later this month. For those interested in the new and novel, Fossil’s Gen 6 Wellness Edition will go on sale October 17 for $300 direct from Fossil.

The Google Pixel Watch 3’s biggest upgrade is all but confirmed
Pixel Watch 3 in two sizes

In a week from now, Google will formally introduce its next slate of Pixel hardware. Like clockwork, almost everything has been spoiled, thanks to an unstoppable stream of leaks. The latest one all but confirms a supersized version of the Pixel Watch 3 -- including one that could solve screen and battery anxiety in one go.

The folks over at Android Headlines (in collaboration with reliable leaker OnLeaks) have shared what looks like an official video advert for the upcoming Google smartwatch. The promo material suggests the wearable comes in two size variants -- 41mm and 45mm -- rocking a familiar round design with smooth curves. In March, 9to5Google also mentioned a new 45mm variant, citing an insider source.

This great Wear OS smartwatch is suddenly a lot more attractive
A promotional image of the Mobvoi TicWatch Pro 5 Enduro in Slate Grey.

Mobvoi has made the recently released TicWatch Pro 5 Enduro more interesting by adding a second color to its repertoire. The smartwatch now comes in a Slate finish, which, although still subtle, shows off the design far more than it does in the original (and a bit boring) Obsidian Black finish.

Based on the promotional images shared by Mobvoi, the good news is this isn’t just a different color strap, as the case itself has been given a matching new finish. It appears to have a similar gray/green color as the strap but with a matte polish to accentuate the lines. The bezel and crown forgo the color change and appear to have been polished to a shine. It helps show off the subtle redesign of the TicWatch 5 Pro Enduro’s looks far more so than the all-black look of the release version. The strap has the same ribbed inner texture and external design as before.

OnePlus has a small portfolio of wearables, particularly smartwatches. Despite its bankable hardware, the OnePlus Watch 2 that launched earlier this year had some evident cutbacks. These include the lack of LTE connectivity, the half-baked crown button, and the absence of now-standard health features such as ECG and body weight composition. With its next watch, OnePlus appears to be addressing some of those issues, a recent certification listing in China has revealed.
