Getting a Google Play services error? You’re not the only one

If you’ve received an alert from Google Play Services to install an update but you can’t find, don’t worry: you aren’t alone. The error message warns that certain official Google apps won’t work unless you update through the Play Store, but no update is available. The problem seems to be affecting a wide number of people, many of whom took to social media to find an answer to the problem.

Tipster CID (@theonecid) reports this same error, and it has been confirmed from several other outlets. The source of the bug isn’t clear, but it seems to affect users on both the stable and beta releases of Play Services.

Here’s the good news. Despite the error message, all of these services appear to be working normally. Some users have reported an update appearing several hours after receiving the message.

There doesn’t seem to be a consistent device source, either. While the problem has been widely reported on the Google Pixel 9 Pro, other users have said it’s appeared on multiple other models and brands. It seems to be completely random regarding who is affected, but at least it doesn’t seem harmful. The biggest issue seems to be that notifications go silent for certain apps.

For now, keep your apps updated to the latest possible version. That seems to alleviate the problem, based on user reports.

Google hasn’t released a statement regarding the cause. Digital Trends has reached out to Google for comment and will update this story if we receive a response.

A native Android Apple TV app is now in the Google Play store
The Apple TV app on a Samsung Android phone.

It's been five years since the Apple TV app was launched, and we're now getting a version for Android devices -- built from the ground up for native Android integration -- in the Google Play store that will have the same Apple TV+ functionality as the Apple ecosystem version. The new app means users with Android OS 10 or later will finally have the ability to sign up for Apple TV+ on their Android-based phones and tablets to watch shows and movies like Severance, Silo, Killers of the Flower Moon, and CODA. There will be no difference in pricing on Android compared to Apple.

This should enable seamless interactivity across platforms for features such as Continue Watching -- which keeps track of where you are in a show or movie and allows you to pick up from that spot when you return, regardless of the device you watch on. Customer's Watchlist will be kept up to date across devices as well, and since purchases are linked to your Apple account, all the content you own will be accessible on any device with the new updated app. One thing missing at launch, though, will be the ability to cast Apple TV content from your Android device.

You can officially download the TikTok app again on Android phones
Download page for TikTok app on Android in the US.

The TikTok app has not returned to the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store, ever since it went dark in the US with a ban looming over its head. That means fresh downloads are not possible on Android and Apple smartphones. Things have finally eased, at least for Android fans.

The official TikTok website now lists the software package that lets users download the app directly, instead of an app repository such as the Google Play Store. Third-party websites have hosted the app's software bundle for a while, but that route usually comes with the risk of malware.

Google Photos is getting new sorting features to cut out chaos

The Google Photos app on Android has been updated with tools to organize the default view more effectively. Google has added fresh options in the app to hide any automatically saved media, such as screenshots or imaged and videos shared through messaging apps such as WhatsApp, bringing about a meaningful change for those who use Google Photos as the primary app to view and sort images and videos on their Android devices. This addition could be a part of the larger redesign that Google Photos may be getting soon.

With this update, Google has expanded sorting features and clubbed them under "Photos view," which replaces the earlier option to "personalize your grid." Android Authority first spotted these new settings, which bring options to "show content from other apps."
