3D puppets mimic your every move in Pocket Avatars, Intel’s first app

Intel may make its money selling processors for computers, but it has its eyes on the world of apps. The chip maker today unveiled Pocket Avatars, its first app. Pocket Avatars will elbow into the crowded chat-messaging space with a new spin: using complex facial-tracking algorithms, it can send a voice message to your friends, letting you animate a character of your choosing. For example, you could ask a friend “Hello, how are you doing?” and have your message delivered by an animated chicken that mimics your delivery. Its mouth will move in sync with yours, as well as its eyebrows and blinking.

The characters almost look like something out of a Pixar movie.

In practice, the characters almost look like something out of a Pixar movie. In a closed-door demo for Digital Trends, Pocket Avatars did a remarkably accurate job, but it wasn’t perfect. It can’t, for example, detect if your tongue is stuck out, or mimic complex gestures like blowing a kiss. For these types of things, Intel has put in some touch gestures.

The app will ship with a few avatars, but already has a store full of about 45 avatars, many of them branded. Jim Hensen Company, Gumby, American Greetings, Annoying Orange, Mr. Bill, and even Lego have signed on to allow their characters to become animated avatars. Custom avatars range from free to $1 in price, and the app itself is free.

Like competing chat services such as Snapchat or WhatsApp, Pocket Avatars requires you and your friends to sign up and join the app, but Intel has included a few ways to share with friends who aren’t using Pocket Avatars yet. You can share recorded messages over text, email, Twitter, or Facebook.

The app is available for Android and iOS now, and may be available on other platforms, like Windows Phone, in the future.

It’s difficult to say whether something like this will take off and go viral, or if it will die out as a quick fad, but the tracking is so accurate that it’s fun to watch. Intel representatives shared some plans for the future, which may include the ability for users to design their own avatars. We also tried the next generation of the app, which includes much more detailed facial animation. For instance, you can move your neck independently of its shoulders, and move each eyebrow.

The app is available for download on the iPhone/iPad App Store and Google Play Store for Android devices.

Apple Watch saves another life by helping detect woman’s fast-spreading cancer
The Apple Watch Series 10 and the Apple Watch Series 3, seen from the front.

There are countless heartwarming stories about different ways the Apple Watch has helped saved people's lives. In addition to the emergency SOS and fall detection features, the Watch offers a suite of insights which can help identify precursors to life-threatening diseases. Recently, a similar story made news when a woman's cancer was caught, thanks to active alerts from an Apple Watch 10.

Amanda Faulkner, a consulting psychiatrist from New Zealand, recently narrated her story where her Apple Watch 10 helped diagnose a rare form of blood cancer, which, if left undiagnosed, would have left her dead in a matter of few days. Faulkner told the New Zealand Herald that her Apple Watch notified her of her unusually high resting heart rate of around 90 beats per minute -- which would typically be around 55 for her.

Leaked Motorola Edge 60 Pro has almost nothing left to hide
The Motorola Edge 50 Pro's camera.

There has been a flurry of new Motorola phones announced over the past weeks, with the Motorola Moto G Stylus 2025 in the U.S. following the Motorola Edge 60 Fusion in the U.K., and now another new Motorola phone has been leaked, suggesting its official launch isn’t far away. The phone is the Motorola Edge 60 Pro, which is set to be one of the brand's top models in 2025, and we can tell by the name it’s a model destined for release outside the U.S., but a version of it is likely to arrive in North America too.

The latest leak shows three different versions of the Edge 60 Pro in new Pantone colors, which are being called Sparkling Grape, Shadow Green, and Dazzling Blue. These may not be the final names attached to the devices by Motorola and partner Pantone. Two of the three colors match a previous leak, which showed the Edge 60 Pro in a promotional video, with a third grey model also featured.

Oppo Find X8 Ultra is the camera flagship I wish I could buy
Camera bump on the Oppo Find X8 Ultra.

Oppo has just introduced what is arguably one of the most powerful smartphones out there, especially for folks who obsess over camera prowess. The Find X8 Ultra packs no less than five imaging sensors at the back, which include two high-resolution zoom cameras with a folded lens setup.

The latest from Oppo doesn’t deviate much from the design language of other members in the Find X8 series, but adds more juice to the photography and video capture chops. Leading the charge is a 50-megapixel primary snapper with a massive 1-inch sensor at its heart, a rarity in the smartphone segment.
