Mobvoi to use Qualcomm’s new chip to make its most powerful smartwatch yet

Mobvoi will use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 processor in a forthcoming smartwatch. It’s one of just a few brands to officially announce it will adopt Qualcomm’s new chip, which was itself only announced on July 19, but Movoi has stopped short of providing masses of details on the device it will be housed within.

What do we know? Only what Mobvoi has told us at this stage, which is the Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 chip will be used in a new TicWatch model, and that it will make it the most powerful smartwatch Mobvoi has released yet. The teaser image above shows a circular smartwatch with a ridged bezel, but gives nothing about the hardware away. The company’s Vice President of Engineering, Robert Zhang, had this to say:

“The differentiated features in the new Snapdragon W5+ platform offer the strongest processing power to date, which we’re excited to bring to our next-generation smartwatch. Our flagship TicWatch smartwatches are one of our most popular product offerings, so we have high hopes for the upcoming release later this year.”

The Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 is one of two new smartwatch chipsets announced by Qualcomm this month, joining the W5 Gen 1 chipset, which is designed for more niche wearable devices including smartwatches made for children and seniors. The W5+ Gen 1 chip is destined for mainstream smartwatches, so it’s perfect for Mobvoi’s TicWatch series. Mobvoi hasn’t released any new smartwatches in 2022, with the TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra arriving in late 2021 after the TicWatch E3. Both these used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear 4100 platform, which has been replaced by the W5 series.

What Mobvoi hasn’t said at this stage is anything about the software on its W5+ Gen 1-powered smartwatch, but we’re hopeful it’ll be Google’s WearOS 3. So far, despite being revealed by Google in 2021, only the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 range uses WearOS 3, although Montblanc’s Summit 3 will join them very soon.

Mobvoi says it will release more details about its future, unnamed W5+ Gen 1 smartwatch, “in the coming months,” which suggests it won’t be publicly revealed until after the summer. At this time it will face competition from the Google Pixel Watch, another anticipated smartwatch release, but it’s expected to use a Samsung-made Exynos processor and not a Qualcomm chip.

We will bring you all the news on Mobvoi’s new smartwatch as it’s revealed.

Mockup renders of reference smartphones with Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 and Snapdragon 7 Gen 1

Qualcomm today announced the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, the souped-up version of its flagship system-on-a-chip (SoC), while marking a shift to its newest naming scheme for the 700 series with its launch of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. Devices powered by these mobile platforms will arrive in the market starting in the current quarter of 2022. In addition, the chipmaker is betting big on a blend of augmented and virtual realities with the introduction of its new wireless smart glasses running on the Snapdragon XR2 platform.

Qualcomm dominates the mobile ecosystem with its vast array of silicon-based solutions for consumer electronics and telecom products. Its Snapdragon 800 series has been the default solution for smartphone manufacturers to power their high-end products. That remains true to date with leading devices, including the Galaxy S22 series, the OnePlus 10 Pro, Motorola Edge Plus (2022), and many more relying on the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 for breathtaking performance. In comparison, the MediaTek Dimensity 9000, Samsung's Exynos 2200, and Google's Tensor have only a handful of takers.

Qualcomm is launching new Snapdragon chips on May 20
qualcomm snapdragon 8 gen 1 launch chip

Qualcomm has put out a teaser on Weibo to confirm its next event which is scheduled for May 20. The event bears the tagline, “new products” and is likely to be livestreamed. There, the company will unveil new Snapdragon chipsets, presumably the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+.

A few years ago, Qualcomm began to produce “Plus” versions of some chipsets. These chipsets are basically souped-up versions of their respective models and are used in Android smartphones that launch during the latter half of the year. In this case, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ will bring improvement over the existing Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, supposedly in the GPU section. It is reported that the chipset will be fabricated on a TSMC’s 4nm manufacturing process. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 also uses the 4nm process but unlike TSMC it was fabricated by Samsung.

Galaxy S22 Ultra with S22 Plus and S22.

Samsung recently unveiled Galaxy S22 series smartphones, marking a major paradigm shift in its flagship portfolio by consolidating the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Note series. Although the Galaxy S22 series did not include many hardware changes over the previous generation, performance gets a major boost with new 4nm chipsets.
Samsung's Galaxy S22 models
Like previous years, Samsung is retaining its dual-chipset policy for its flagship Galaxy S22 series and will be selling the flagship devices with chipsets varying as per region. While major markets such as the U.S., Canada, South Korea, and Hong Kong will get Galaxy S22 smartphones powered by Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 mobile platform, we can expect Samsung to task its own flagship Exynos 2200 chipset with powering the Galaxy S22 in other regions.

As per tipster Dohyun Kim, the Galaxy S22 series will feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset in more regions, including North and South Americas and East as well as Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, regions such as the Middle East, West Asia, and Africa will get a mix of Exynos 2200 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, whereas Samsung will continue to sell the Galaxy S series in Europe with Exynos chips as earlier.
