Accident prone? Don’t worry: OnePlus brings its warranty program to the U.S. and Canada

Hot on the heels of its OnePlus X launch, OnePlus has brought its extended warranty program to the U.S. and Canada, so you have some options if you’re worried about your phone’s protection.

OnePlus released its warranty program, On-Guard by Simplesurance, in Europe on November 2, and this time it’s pairing up with Assurant Solutions to bring its coverage over to North America.

New OnePlus X and OnePlus 2 owners can pay a fee for On-Guard’s Extended Service Coverage (ESC) and Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH) coverage. ESC provides replacement coverage for hardware failures due to manufacturer defects, and ADH, as the name implies, covers drops, liquid spills, and cracks.

Previously, if you wanted to repair your OnePlus device, you had to ship it back to China, but now that the company is pairing with a U.S. company to handle repairs, the turnaround for Return Merchandise Authorizations (RMA) and repairs should be much quicker.

Below are the pricing options for the OnePlus 2 and the OnePlus X in the U.S. and Canada:

The plans include On-Guard 12, as well as On-Guard Plus 18 and 24. The plans differ in their of the length of coverage and whether ADH is included.

Customers can only sign up for On-Guard after they purchase a new device, whether it’s a OnePlus X or a OnePlus 2, which is unfortunate for existing OnePlus device owners.

“We are not able to offer a grace period for second chance enrollment,” the company said in its blog post announcement. “However, we are working hard with Assurant to offer this service as soon as possible.”

So if you’re an existing OnePlus device owner looking to get an extended warranty, keep an eye out. If you’re in the market for a new device, remember, you need an invitation to buy a OnePlus phone.

OnePlus 9 Pro’s throttling controversy shows why benchmarks don’t always matter
OnePlus 9 Pro's camera module in close up.

All smartphones are pretty fast nowadays. A long as you get a phone that costs over $300, you should expect to have little to no issue with speed. The very best smartphones, from iPhones to Android, offer fast and powerful chips that do far more than we need in our day-to-day lives. No more is this more apparent than a recent scandal around OnePlus and the OnePlus 9 series.

OnePlus recently came under fire for appearing to slow down performance when a user used some of the most popular Android apps on their newest flagship phones. When using an app like Chrome, Microsoft Office, or WhatsApp, performance would drop relative to performance for benchmarking apps. This behavior was spotted in a performance review of the OnePlus 9 Pro and substantiated by Geekbench who opted to remove the phone from their Android Benchmark charts.

Don’t worry, the OnePlus 9 will come with a fast charger in the box
OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro problems and solutions.

OnePlus is gearing up to release the OnePlus 9, and the company is also prepping to buck a somewhat detrimental smartphone trend -- the absence of a charging brick with new phones -- in the process. Writing in response to a query by a potential customer, CEO Pete Lau confirmed the upcoming phone would ship with both a charging cable and charging brick in the box.

It may seem like an unremarkable thing to note, but much like the headphone jack, it is no longer a guarantee your new smartphone will come with an accessory that was once taken for granted. In a trend popularized by Apple and the iPhone 12, some other phone manufacturers have opted to start shipping their phones in smaller boxes without charging bricks because most users already have chargers lying around and can easily do without them. It's also being eschewed for environmental reasons aimed at reducing the e-waste from excess chargers.
