The next OnePlus smartwatch is coming soon with a big upgrade

We now know when we’ll likely see the OnePlus Watch 2, at least if rumors from well-known leaker and writer Max Jambor are to be believed.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter), the OnePlus Watch 2 will be launched at Mobile World Congress in late February, and it will also come with a massive upgrade the first OnePlus Watch lacked: Wear OS.

The first OnePlus Watch was a lackluster attempt in many ways, but one of the biggest missteps was OnePlus’s decision to use its own operating system instead of Google’s Wear OS. While Wear OS has its problems, it’s a strong platform to build onto, already coming with support for Google’s services and app store.

OnePlus’s OS, by not building on top of what already existed, had to start from scratch — plunging the smartwatch into the early days of wearables, where apps were a luxury and “user-friendly” was just a pipe dream. If Jambor’s statement is to be believed, OnePlus has learned its lesson this time around and will show off a much-improved smartwatch at MWC in late February.

It’s the first we’ve heard of a new OnePlus smartwatch in some time, with the last rumors coming in November of last year. According to those leaks, the OnePlus Watch 2 will further establish its own visual flair and distinctive design, with a flattened right edge that calls back to Casio’s G-Shock watches, along with a round dial.

Those same rumors also pointed towards the watch using the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 processor, making the second watch a rather more powerful wearable than the first OnePlus Watch. Also mentioned was a 1.43-inch OLED display, though keep in mind that all of those leaks were supposedly based on a prototype in testing, so take all details with a pinch of salt.

We don’t have long to find out how truthful these leaks are, though, as Mobile World Congress isn’t too far now. MWC 2024 is due to take place in Barcelona, as ever, and will run from February 26 until February 29.

Can this smartwatch get me back into running?

I'll admit it, I'm not a born runner. Far from a graceful antelope on the plains, my natural gait is more akin to a tube man in a gale, limbs flying awkwardly, while also sweating heavily and gasping for air. But even the worst runner wants to see their stats, and for me, that's meant I've played with a bunch of fitness watches and smartwatches over the years. Those fun little bits of tech have been primarily responsible for me keeping up some level of a running habit, and I love them for it.

But, the last few years have seen not one, but two beautiful bundles of joy added to my household. And as every parent knows, your personal time shrinks in inverse proportion to how small the newest human member of the family is. As such, I haven't had much time to myself recently, and exercise has been neglected. That's really not something you want to see as you approach your fall years, and so, when the OnePlus Watch 3 arrived, I took it as a good reason to get back out there again, and start pounding some pavements.

Is it OnePlus or Nothing? I try two brilliant bargain phones to find out

I’ve been using, and very much enjoying, the OnePlus 13R for the last week. But it got me thinking, I spent several weeks with the Nothing Phone 3a Pro recently too, and it’s cheaper to buy than the OnePlus phone. The unusual connection linking the two together is Carl Pei. Pei co-founded OnePlus, and after moving on from the company he founded Nothing. The Nothing Phone 3a Pro is the brand’s most recent release, sitting slightly higher in the range than the Nothing Phone 3a. The brand thrives on brilliant marketing, some of it straight out of the original OnePlus playbook, and goes to great efforts to build a healthy, vibrant community around its products.

Your OnePlus 12 is picking up these useful features

Several new features are being rolled out for OnePlus 12 users as part of the OxygenOS 15.0.0.701 update, which is based on Android 15.

This update, which includes the March 2025 security patch, primarily focuses on enhanced customization for the home screen. Users can now resize app folders to either 1x2 or 2x1 dimensions. Additionally, the dock can accommodate five apps when the home screen is set to display four apps per row. OnePlus 12 users will also enjoy improved music player controls for Spotify within the Live Alerts feature.
