Realme’s first truly premium phone is finally set for a January 4 launch

Realme may be better known for midrange and budget devices, but it has been teasing the launch of its first premium smartphone, the Realme GT 2 Pro, for a few weeks now. The Realme GT 2 series will be launching on January 4. As per the company, its new flagship phone will have three “world’s first innovations” in the smartphone industry, including design, camera, and communication features.

According to the invite, the Realme GT 2 series will be announced in China on January 4 at 11:30 am CST. However, there is no information on when the devices will arrive in other parts of the world.

What’s under the hood?

As for specs, we know some of them. The Realme GT 2 Pro is expected to feature a 6.7-inch AMOLED display and offer a Quad HD+ resolution with a 120Hz refresh rate. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC, paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

The device is said to sport a triple rear camera setup with two 50-megapixel lenses and a third telephoto camera. On the front, you could get a 32MP selfie shooter. The Realme GT 2 Pro will have a new ultra-wide-angle sensor with a 150-degree field of view (FoV). The company will also introduce a fisheye mode that is claimed to make photographs more appealing with its “ultra-long depth of field effect.” Furthermore, the Realme GT 2 Pro will also get a Wi-Fi enhancer and 360-degree NFC support.

Meanwhile, the base Realme GT 2 is likely to have a different design language. It could come equipped with a 6.62-inch AMOLED display and Full HD+ resolution alongside a 120Hz refresh rate. It could also have 50MP, 8MP, and 2MP rear cameras and both smartphones are likely to have support for 65W fast charging.

Is your new phone really a gaming phone if it doesn’t have some kind of shoulder-mounted triggers on it? Poco doesn’t think so, and its new F4 GT smartphone has a set of “magnetic triggers that pop up, standing tall in preparation for battle,” according to the press release. We haven’t seen them in action at the time of writing, but this sounds exactly like the kind of gimmicky feature we love to see.

Further defined as, “levitating magnetic pop up triggers,” the buttons have apparently been tested for more than 1.5 million presses and with 100 different games, plus they can be used as shortcuts to activate the camera, flashlight, or screen recording features when you’re not playing a game. Shoulder buttons have been seen on various gaming phones already, including the Asus ROG Phone 5 and the RedMagic 7 Pro, but Poco’s version does sound suitably different, making us keen to try them out.

What has happened to OnePlus? Once the darling of the shrewd smartphone bargain hunter, the company has lost its way with the latest OnePlus 10 Pro and left itself open to being usurped by a cheaper newcomer. What’s worse (for OnePlus, not you) is the challenger comes from within. It’s the Realme GT 2 Pro, and it’s practically the same phone as the OnePlus 10 Pro, just cheaper.

Let’s look at the two together, and see why saving some money and ignoring the marketing is the wise decision here.
How much?
Buyers in the U.S. will pay $899 for the 8GB/128GB OnePlus 10 Pro, while in the U.K. the phone costs 799 British pounds, or 899 pounds for the 12GB/256GB version. The Realme GT 2 Pro costs 699 pounds, or about $910, for the 12GB/256GB model.
