Verizon: 2.2 million iPhones sold in Q1, iPhone 5 will be dual-mode CDMA and GSM

verizon-iphone-4Verizon Wireless announced today that it raked in a total of 2.2 million iPhone 4 activations in the first quarter of 2011. Overall, Verizon reports that the company added 1.8 million new customers, of which 906,000 of those signed wireless contracts. In addition to the iPhone, Verizon sold about 260,000 units of the HTC Thunderbolt, the first phone to work on the company’s high-speed 4G LTE network.

The company reported earnings of $3.26 billion on a revenue of about $27 billion. At the end of the first quarter, Verzion said it had 104 million total connections with 88.4 retail customers. This news was met with disappointment by Wall Street, which expected better results from Verizon. In response to the earnings report, Verizon shares fell 84 cents, or 2.2 percent, to $36.94.

Verizon Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo defended his company’s quarterly performance, saying, “We really weren’t 100 percent out there with distribution until mid-March.”

Verizon also revealed that the upcoming iPhone 5 will have dual-mode capabilities, which will allow one device to connect to both Verizon’s CDMA network, and GSM networks like AT&T. This also enables the next-generation Apple smartphone to be a “global device,” the company said, meaning it would be capable of connecting to GSM networks abroad.

The iPhone 5 is currently expected to ship in September. Verizon said that it hopes to add a total of about 11 million iPhone units to its network in 2011.

AT&T, which until January had exclusive rights to the Apple’s iPhone, reported that it added 3.6 million iPhone units during the same period.  Sales from the two companies helped Apple sell a massive 18.65 million iPhones during the first quarter of 2011. Those sales helped the company bring in a record profit of $5.99 billion, up from $3.07 billion during the same period last year.

A pair of 12-megapixel cameras live on the back of the Galaxy Z Flip 4, both covering the main and wide-angle duties. The main camera has optical image stabilization and an f/1.8 aperture, while the wide-angle camera has a 123-degree field of view. There’s no telephoto camera, but Samsung provides a 10x digital zoom feature. However, it doesn't make it a big deal and has not added a shortcut to the camera app.

The iPhone 14 Pro has a 48MP main camera with its second-generation optical image stabilization and an f/1.78 aperture, which is joined by a 12MP wide-angle camera and a 12MP telephoto with 2x and 3x optical zoom. On the software side, Apple loads its new Photonic Engine, plus Deep Fusion and Smart HDR 4 features. The 12MP selfie camera also makes use of these features, while the Samsung phone has a 10MP f/2.4 camera at the top of the screen.

If you’re in the market for a new iPhone and want to make sure you can take advantage of all the great features 5G offers, then it’s essential to make sure you get the right iPhone model. It’s not that much of a stretch to see the Nothing Phone 1 would like to be the iPhone of the Android world, with its flat-sided design, clean software, a growing ecosystem of similar products, and the dual-camera layout on the back. But can it win over potential iPhone buyers, or steal them away from a reasonably priced iPhone? To find out, we put the Nothing Phone 1 against the most affordable competing iPhone Apple still sells, the iPhone 11.
The phones and cameras
Before we get into the photos, let's talk about the choice of iPhone. The Nothing Phone 1 starts at 400 British pounds, or about $480. For this, it has a midrange processor, a large 6.55-inch screen, and a dual camera on the back. While the iPhone SE (2022) comes in around the same price, it’s not exactly comparable in specification, and the latest iPhone 13 costs $800 or 780 pounds. While it’s closer in spec, it’s considerably more money to buy.

To get the equivalent modern iPhone that’s sold brand-new, we need to go back in time a little. Apple still sells the iPhone 12 new for $599 or 679 pounds, which is still a little too expensive, but at $499 or 489 pounds, the iPhone 11 is just about right. After all, the top Nothing Phone 1 with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage space costs 499 pounds, or about $590. If you’ve got $500 maximum to spend on a big-screen smartphone, the iPhone 11 is probably going to be on the list alongside the Nothing Phone 1.
