Around 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Hurricane Matthew, a Category 4 storm system, made landfall in Les Anglais, Haiti. Information is still slowly trickling in regarding the full extent of the damage, with the New York Times reporting “major devastation as the storm felled trees, ripped roofs, and destroyed farms” in the island nation.

For those with loved ones in Haiti, communication at this time is of the essence. And to that end, Verizon is hoping to help connect its customers with family and friends in the wake of the storm. “Verizon is offering free wireless and wireline calling from the United States to Haiti to connect with family and friends,” the mobile service provider said in a statement on Tuesday.

For the next three days (between Tuesday, October 4, and Friday, October 7), Verizon home wireline telephone customers will incur no charges on calls made to Haiti from their U.S. landlines. Moreover, wireless customers will see no charges for either texts or international long distance calls from the States to Haiti.

Moreover, the provider announced, “Verizon Wireless customers who wish to help with Hurricane Matthew Relief efforts, via mobile phone, can donate by texting 80100 with the word ‘MATTHEW.'” This will result in a $10 donation to aid in relief efforts, as donations are collected on behalf of the GlobalGiving — Hurricane Matthew Relief Fund.

Sadly, the logistics behind getting in touch with those in Haiti may be murky — reports note that much of the island nation has been plunged into darkness as the storm wiped out electrical systems. And although the hurricane itself has passed, what remains of the system might bring up to 40 inches of rain in parts of the country.

According to two U.S. military officials, three American Navy ships have been sent to the Caribbean to help, and Matthew is currently en route to eastern Cuba.

This tiny sensor could be the future of smartphone photography
The all-in-one stack on the PxE imaging camera

If you’ve been taking portrait photos on your phone for several years, you’ll know that most phones have gotten progressively better. As smartphone camera technology has evolved, so has the ability of phone makers to capture depth information better. As a result, we're able to take portrait photos with better bokeh and detail.

However, there’s still a long way to go, especially as each smartphone takes wildly different portrait photos. Last week, during CES 2025, I saw a new holographic technology that holds a lot of promise and could usher in a new era of smartphone portrait photography. Here’s how it works and everything you need to know about it.

Apple admits this Apple Intelligence feature still needs a lot of work
Setting up Notification Summaries feature on iPhone.

Apple’s ambitions of serving a reliable AI experience on iPhones are off to a rough start. The BBC recently highlighted how one of the new Apple Intelligence features that summarizes notification alerts has been making up news and serving misleading information.

The company is now making a course correction with the latest iOS beta update, which disables AI notification summaries for news apps, and makes a host of other preventive changes. The update in question is 18.3 Beta 3, and it is now widely available for testers. Here's what to expect.

A person holding the OnePlus 12.

While Apple, Samsung, and Google devices tend to dominate the mobile device market, there are a handful of third-party alternatives that are just as good (if not better in some cases), and one of these underdogs is OnePlus. For years, OnePlus has been releasing fast, powerful, and feature-rich smartphones, and, as luck would have it, one of them is on sale today:

When you purchase both the 256GB and 512GB versions of the OnePlus 12 directly through OnePlus, you’ll get $100 off the usual MSRP! It’s one of the best phone deals we’ve seen all week, and when we tested the OnePlus 12 last April, our team said: “The OnePlus 12 is a tremendous smartphone value — and one of the top Android phones to beat in 2024.”
