Incredible leaked Vivo phone may have a screen-to-body ratio of more than 100%

IceUniverse/Twitter

Vivo, a smartphone brand already known for pushing the design envelope on its phones, may be working on something very special indeed. A leak has shown two panes of glass with 90-degree curves at either side, ready to encase the entire body of a phone in screen, giving it a higher than 100% screen-to-body ratio. Currently, we have seen phones with screen-to-body ratios around 90%. It’s speculated the phone will be called the Vivo Nex 3.

Leaked on Twitter by @IceUniverse, who has a strong record with accuracy, the body shape is described as, “symmetrical and perfect.” If that wasn’t enough, the high-tech phone will not have a notch or hole-punch, indicating the selfie camera will be under the screen. We have recently seen this kind of technology in prototype form from Oppo, Both Oppo and Vivo are part of the BBK Electronics empire, along with OnePlus. It’s also possible the company will use a pop-up selfie camera.

Outside of the leaked photo — which shows two mirror image pieces of glass that presumably form the body — nothing else is known about the Vivo Nex 3. If the name is correct, we may not know much more for some time, as the Vivo Nex 2 hasn’t even been released. However, Vivo’s naming convention for the Nex range is confusing. The original Vivo Nex — also known as the Vivo Nex S — has since been joined by the Nex A and the Nex Dual Display. There are barely any rumors regarding a Nex 2 at this stage, but you can spot the lineage between these devices and the Nex 3’s all-screen design.

Does this mean the Nex 3 as seen here will never arrive either? Vivo has a history of creating stunning concept phones, and the Nex 3 from the rumor may be another one. In 2018 it showed off the Apex, a concept phone with technology such as an in-display fingerprint sensor and a pop-up camera, which heralded the arrival of the original Nex. Then, a year later it made the Apex 2019, an all-glass phone without any buttons or ports. While it was demonstrated, the phone has so far not become a commercial reality.

It could go either way for the so-called Nex 3, and even if the massive screen expanse can be made real, we’re not sure about the ergonomics of holding a phone that has screen on the front, the sides, and possibly the back as well. At the very least may give us a good indication at how phone designers are envisaging the look of devices in the near future.

4 big names commit to MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 chip for flagship phones
The MediaTek headquarters in Taiwan.

The Dimensity 9000 is MediaTek’s first true flagship smartphone processor, and one that is expected to power a wide variety of high-end devices over the next year. MediaTek said at its launch that the first devices with the chip inside would arrive during the first three months of 2022, and it has now released details on which manufacturers are signed on to use the Dimensity 9000.

Currently, there are four names on the list, and due to MediaTek’s admission that the Dimensity 9000 would initially be most relevant to the Chinese market, several of the manufacturers don’t have a big international presence at the moment. However, one stands out as being different, and that’s Oppo. The company says “the next Find X flagship will be the first to be launched with the Dimensity 9000 flagship platform.”

Your $1,000 flagship may not have faster 5G speeds than a budget phone
Moto Edge 20 Lite, OnePlus Nord 2, Oppo Find X3 Lite, and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.

After spending over $1,000 on a flagship 5G phone, you might think you're getting the fastest network speeds possible. After all, isn't that what you're paying for? But our recent network testing shows that may very well not be the case, with 5G performance on flagship phones being minimally better than budget phones, and in some cases, actually worse.

To give you some context, earlier this year, we put the 5G-capable MediaTek Dimensity 700 against the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 in a test to see which processor delivered the best 5G performance and had the best daily user experience. Six months on, we’re going to take a look at four new 5G phones with different chips to see how they compare to answer this question: Does paying more for a smartphone with a flagship processor inside give you the fastest network connection, or is it all pumped-up marketing?
Understanding 5G
Before going into the details, we received some very interesting feedback from MediaTek after our last test, which is also relevant to this one. MediaTek contacted Digital Trends to discuss the 5G speed test results, as the Dimensity 700-powered Realme 8 5G couldn’t match the Oppo A54 5G with a Qualcomm chip inside. The company then took its own test equipment to the area where I had tested the phones, and in conversations afterwards, it gave plenty of insight into how 5G varies across phones, networks, and location.
