Vivo unveils its X7 and X7 Plus flagship phones

Even though Chinese phone manufacturer Vivo unveiled the X6 and X6 Plus in December, the guts of both phones were rather underwhelming. Vivo hopes to change that a mere six months later with the X7 and X7 Plus.

Design-wise, neither phone really breaks new ground — the X7 and X7 Plus feature aluminum on the back and glass on the front, with the aluminum interrupted by antenna lines and a home button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner below the screen.

As with their predecessors, the X7 and X7 Plus have plenty of similarities, such as an octa-core 1.8Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 chipset and 4GB RAM. Furthermore, both phones feature 64GB of native storage, a huge 16-megapixel selfie shooter, and dual-SIM capabilities.

In terms of software, the X7 and X7 Plus run Funtouch OS 2.5.1, which is based on the aging Android 5.1 Lollipop. With the software, both phones let you filter out blue light to make it easier to look at the displays in dark environments. Two other features include ID Wake, which lets you double tap the screen to turn it on, and Moonlight, which softly lights the display when taking a selfie.

The X7 and X7 Plus feature 1,920 x 1,080 resolution displays, though that is the first of several differences between the two phones — the X7’s display measures in at 5.2 inches, while the X7 Plus’ bumps it up to 5.7 inches. Even though the X7 features a respectable 3,000mAh battery, the X7 Plus uses its additional room to accommodate a larger 4,000mAh battery pack.

Finally, whereas the X7 packs a 13MP main camera with f/2.2 aperture, the X7 Plus features a 16MP rear shooter with a brighter f/2.0 aperture.

The X7 will launch on July 7 for CNY 2,498 ($376), while the X7 Plus currently has no listed price and will launch on July 15. Regardless of which phone you go for, they will be available in gold and rose gold.

It’s 2025 and the OnePlus Pad 2 is still my favorite Android tablet

For decades, smartphones have progressively grown larger, and subsequently, so have tablets, and the lines between big phones and small tablets have grown progressively more blurry. Some companies make smaller phones or tablets, but these are exceptions to the rule.

A case in point is Samsung’s tablet portfolio. Samsung debuted the Galaxy Tab S10 series in October but dropped a replacement for the regular Galaxy Tab S9. The Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra pick up where their predecessors left off, but if you’re a Galaxy Tab S9 user, you’ll either have to buy the FE series or switch to an alternative.

2024 was the year of small flagship phones
iPhone 16 Pro and Pixell 9 Pro on top of it.

We’ve had companies try making small phones in the past, but they couldn’t stand the test of time. Apple tried the small iPhones with the iPhone 12 mini and the iPhone 13 mini, but like most small phones, they were plagued by bad battery life and saw underwhelming sales -- despite the much-beloved pocketable size.

But 2024 redefined what "small" means in flagship phones. This was a year when compact devices finally stopped playing second fiddle to their larger siblings, but there's still one missing piece that needs to be addressed.

OnePlus has another phone to show us on January 7, 2025
A teaser image for the OnePlus 13 launch event in January 2025.

The OnePlus 13R will be joining the OnePlus 13 at its launch event on January 7, 2025. Following official confirmation of the date, OnePlus has shared plenty of information about the OnePlus 13R, which wasn’t mentioned at all in its previous press release. However, if you’re expecting to learn all about the phone, OnePlus is still up to its old tricks of sharing just enough about it to keep us interested while holding back a few choice facts for the big day in January.

Described as a “pocket powerhouse,” OnePlus has not shared what processor or how much RAM the OnePlus 13R will use but does say it’ll have a 6,000mAh battery to power the device. This is a small but significant increase over the OnePlus 12R’s 5,500mAh battery, which was the largest the company had put into a smartphone at the time. The OnePlus 13R will take that crown away from its predecessor.
