You can play Space Invaders on this crazy retro smartwatch

Who wants an Apple Watch Series 10 when you can have a smartwatch that celebrates the classic arcade game Space Invaders on it? If you’re leaning toward the second option, then head over to crowdfunding platform Kickstarter, where you’ll find the wearable of your dreams. It’s called the Space Invaders: My Play Watch, and it takes smartwatches in a fun new direction.

The name gives the Space Invaders: My Play Watch’s special feature away. It has a version of Space Invaders installed that’s specially designed to be played using the watch’s tiny touchscreen and the rotating crown, and it has been created in partnership with Taito, the video game company behind the groundbreaking original.

While we cheekily pitched it as an alternative to the Apple Watch, that’s not really what the Space Invaders watch is all about. Jeff Hardy, co-founder of My Play Watch, says in the press release: “We’re not competing with your phone-linked smartwatch. Our vision was to create a stylish, functional wearable that allows Space Invaders fans to wear their passion while experiencing both a simple gaming experience and essential modern features.”

What about those features? You look at a 1.86-inch touchscreen set inside a modestly sized case that’s 11mm thick, and it’s attached to one of four different 22mm bands, each with a unique Space Invaders design. Unsurprisingly these days, the My Play Watch doesn’t have a round case, but is instead highly reminiscent of the Apple Watch with its rectangular case shape.

It does not seem to require a connection to your phone at all, so there’s no accompanying app, and rather than being a downside, this indicates the battery life should be decent. However, there’s no mention in the Kickstarter blurb of how long we should expect it to last, or how it’s recharged either. Interestingly, the Space Invaders: My Play Watch does have fitness-tracking capabilities, and a heart rate monitor is visible on the back. When you’re not playing Space Invaders, the watch shows the time on a variety of different Space Invaders-themed faces.

The Space Invaders: My Play Watch can be backed on Kickstarter for $75 with your choice of band design, or you can spend $200 to get all the bands along with the watch. The campaign has already reached its target, and the watch is expected to ship in December. As with all crowdfunding campaigns, there are risks involved that may mean a delay in shipping or even a cancellation of the project entirely. It’s also frustrating that the technical aspects of the watch — from the battery life to the screen resolution and the operating system — are entirely missing from the description.

My Play Watch wants the Space Invaders watch to be the first in a line of similar models, all celebrating different games or entertainment franchises and set to be released over the next year. It’s not the first watch we’ve seen with a Space Invaders theme either, with Timex introducing a Space Invaders watch in 2022, but without the option to actually play the game.

The Gamestation Retro Go

My Arcade has unveiled several devices at CES 2025. These are all part of the Gamestation Retro line of hardware, gaming devices that will contain over 100 retro games, including classic titles from Capcom and Bandai Namco Entertainment.

Gamestation Retro products will be available in handheld, console, and tabletop arcade cabinet form. The Gamestation Retro Go is a handheld system that looks a bit like a Nintendo Switch. The gaming handheld has an 8-inch HD display and a rechargeable battery and will retail for $200. Those who prefer to play retro games on their TVs can pick up the Gamestation Retro Pro, a game console with 1080p HDMI output that comes with two wireless controllers and is slightly cheaper with a $150 price tag.

You can play Halo’s original 1999 demo for the first time
Master Chief in Halo Combat Evolved.

The Halo franchise has been around for a long time, but we've never seen a leak quite this big before. More than 25 years of Halo content has leaked onto the internet, including a playable version of the game from before it was even a first-person shooter.

Halo Studios — formerly 343 Industries — has been working with the modding team Digsite since last summer to scour through game files and bring back content that hadn't made it off the cutting room floor, according to Video Games Chronicle. Last month's release of the Halo 2 E3 2003 demo was the result of this project.

Key art for Star Wars: Tales from Galaxy's Edge - Enhanced Edition.

Did you just get a PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, or PlayStation VR2 for Christmas? If so, you've come to the right place. One of the best things you can do is buy a PlayStation Plus Premium or Extra subscription, as that will give you access to a large catalog of games from every PlayStation platform to check out on your new hardware. As for more specific recommendations, this week I want to highlight some of the hidden gems that were part of December's addition to PS Plus. That includes a Star Wars game that's one of the best PSVR2 titles, an eerie Alien game that you only have another week or so to claim, and an underrated 2023 indie.

Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge Enhanced Edition - Official Trailer | PS VR2

One standout launch title for PSVR2 was Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge -- Enhanced Edition. This is a VR game that does a fantastic job of whisking players away and immersing them in various parts of the Star Wars world as a Jedi, bounty hunter, and more. That includes a digital version of Batuu, the planet that Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland and Disney World is based on. It's still one of the best games you can play on PSVR2 and worth checking out for any Star Wars fan. In general, PS Plus Premium's VR game catalog is worth it for anyone who owns Sony's headset. Tales from the Galaxy's Edge is simply the latest cherry on top.
