Amazon reportedly considering ad-supported tier for Prime Video

Amazon could be close to launching an ad-supported tier for its Prime Video service, according to a Wall Street Journal report on Wednesday.

People familiar with the proposed plan said talks on the matter have been continuing for several weeks, though are described as still being in the early stages.

According to the Journal, advertisers are keen for Amazon to launch an ad tier for its Prime Video service, with access to premium movies and programs a particular target.

At the current time, Prime Video is part of Amazon’s Prime package and costs $15 per month or $139 per year. For those who can do without extras such as shopping perks, music streaming, and Kindle books, membership to Prime Video costs $9 a month. Amazon also has a free ad-supported service called Freevee with select TV shows and movies, but it’s only available in the U.S., U.K., and Germany.

An ad-supported tier for Prime Video would follow in the footsteps of streaming rivals such as Netflix, which introduced ads in November last year for $7 per month, and Disney+, whose ad tier arrived in December for $8 per month. Hulu and Peacock also offer ad tiers for $8 and $5 per month, respectively.

Amazon’s Prime Video service is already generating some revenue through ads with its sports programming, and also via product placements with some of its content.

But bringing ads to more of its movies and shows would bring it more revenue and pave the way for an ad-supported tier that could prove an attractive option for those looking for a cheaper way to subscribe.

Ad tiers often come with restrictions, however. Netflix’s offering, for example, limits streams to 720p and only lets you play content on one device at a time. And while you can download Netflix movies and shows for offline viewing with the Basic, Standard, and Premium tiers, its ad tier does not allow this feature.

If you fancy trying Amazon Prime — and Prime Video — for free, the company offers a one-month trial. Here’s how to set it up.

With everything going on in the world right now, we could all use a laugh or two. A good comedy can help you escape for an hour and a half or two, sinking into the comfort of your couch or bed as you belly laugh loudly to the humorous situations depicted on screen.

Of the three comedies on Amazon Prime Video you need to watch in March 2025, two are movies from the last 20 years, and one is a classic sitcom from the 1970s that you probably didn’t even know was available on the streamer.

Amazon Prime Video’s AI dubbing could placate cinephiles while angering voice actors
The Amazon Prime Video app icon on Roku.

Amazon Prime Video plans to use AI to dub foreign language shows and movies into English and Latin American Spanish. The company has begun a pilot program that uses "AI-aided" dubbing on 12 licensed movies and series, including titles such as El Cid: La Leyenda, Mi Mamá Lora, and Long Lost.

Amazon says the pilot uses a hybrid approach to dubbing "in which localization professionals collaborate with AI to ensure quality control," and made it clear that it will only use its AI-aided process on content that doesn't already have dubbing support.

What’s new on Amazon Prime Video in March 2025
The cast of The Wheel of Time season 3.

Amazon Prime Video has a very annoying habit of being late with its list of library titles of classic TV shows and movies joining the library each month. For March, Prime Video has decided not to disclose its new library additions at all. We can only assume that new movies arrived on Prime Video at the start of March, but Amazon has left us all in the dark. The other major streamers share detailed breakdowns of their new films and TV series.

But as of March 4, Amazon has only shared the bare minimum of what's coming to Prime Video in March. To be fair, it's a good lineup. The fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, is premiering its third season on March 13, while the long-running Bosch franchise comes to a close with season 3 of Bosch: Legacy on March 27. To put it in perspective, Bosch was one of the first Prime Video original series in 2014! Ten seasons across two shows is a great run by any measure.
