Better Call Saul almost had Saul working at Hot Topic instead of Cinnabon

Although it’s mostly a prequel to Breaking Bad, a huge slice of the action of Better Call Saul takes place in the aftermath of the original show. In those black-and-white scenes, Jimmy (aka Saul and Gene) is working at a Cinnabon in a mall in Nebraska. According to Peter Gould, who wrote for Breaking Bad and was a showrunner on Better Call Saul, Gene was almost working at another mall staple.

Gould posted a photo from the script for the penultimate episode of Breaking Bad on Bluesky. In the script, Saul suggests that he might wind up working at Hot Topic, not Cinnabon. “I mean, a month from now, best case scenario, I’m managing a Hot Topic in Omaha,” Saul says in the script.

In the caption, Gould wrote, “Came across this page from an early draft of #BreakingBad’s penultimate episode. Cinnabon? Not just yet!”

The next day, Gould elaborated, explaining why Hot Topic was switched out for Cinnabon. “In fact, we found out that Hot Topic was carrying #BreakingBad stuff, and we didn’t want to make it look like a cheap promo. So Cinnabon it was! (And they had no idea about it until the episode aired.)”

Of course, when Gould and the Breaking Bad writers wrote that line, they had no idea that Better Call Saul would eventually make it into a reality. Cinnabon became such an essential part of Better Call Saul that the show’s star, Bob Odenkirk, even learned how to make the treats himself. “I know what goes into Cinnabons. And I’m not going to tell you. So that you can still enjoy them,” Odenkirk told Conan O’Brien in 2016.

Jimmy feels the heat in Better Call Saul season 6 trailer
Bob Odenkirk in Better Call Saul.

The world of Breaking Bad may be coming to an end now that Better Call Saul is heading into its final season. Astute viewers are well aware that Better Call Saul is both a prequel and a sequel to the original series. Each season has opened with a glimpse of Saul's depressing life as "Gene" after he lost everything in Breaking Bad. In the past five seasons, viewers have witnessed how the loveable Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman became Albuquerque's favorite "criminal lawyer." What no one expected was that Jimmy would drag his lover, Kim Wexler, down to his level. Even Jimmy was shocked by that!

However, Kim's darker turn is clearly haunting her in the first trailer for Better Call Saul season 6. And she may be correct in assuming that she is being followed by someone with nefarious intentions. Jimmy also discovers that he can't escape the shadow of the Salamanca cartel. After the events of last season, Jimmy is viewed as the Salamanca's go-to lawyer, and that's attention that he could do without.

Margot Robbie and Diego Calva in Babylon.

Hulu may drop most of its top movies for the month on the 1st, but it does offer a selection of fresh films every week even if the streamer doesn't always do a good job of promoting these new additions. Case in point: Babylon is coming to Hulu on March 8, and the streamer hasn't even added a page for the movie yet. Regardless, this overlooked gem is one of our picks for the three great Hulu movies that you need to stream this weekend.

Our remaining two picks include a very strong drama that's closing in on its 20th anniversary, as well as a comedy that fell under the radar despite its callbacks to an earlier era that make it even funnier.

Mickey 17 ending, explained
Robert Pattinson as Mickeys 17 and 18 in "Mickey 17."

After several years of waiting, director Bong Joon-ho's latest sci-fi comedy film, Mickey 17, has finally premiered in theaters. Adapted from Edward Ashton's novel Mickey7, Bong's movie follows Mickey, a man down on his luck who signs up to be an "expendable" laborer on the ice planet Niflheim for a fresh start. However, he starts fresh again and again as his job forces him to die and be reborn in a cloned body, eventually fighting for his life as a war with Niflheim's native creatures breaks out.

It's a very different story from Bong's more grounded black comedy Parasite. Nevertheless, Bong delivers another dark satire with Mickey 17's story, which holds several surprises and many implications about humanity and its future. At the same time, it gives audiences an idea of where Bong and his new sci-fi film franchise could go from here.
What's the story of Mickey 17?
