Chainsaw Man anime will come to Crunchyroll later this year

Sony’s Crunchyroll streaming service has lined up one of the most anticipated new anime series of the year. Earlier this week, Crunchyroll announced that it will stream Chainsaw Man when it debuts later this year. The anime series is based upon Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man manga which was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump.

With such an audacious title, it should be no surprise to learn that the title character actually can transform parts of his body into chainsaws. But not because he would have wanted it that way. The lead character’s real name is Denji, and he lives in an alternate world where the supernatural is out in the open and demons are manifested from humanity’s collective fears. After being fatally injured, Denji makes a deal with pet Devil, Pochita, to become a human/demon hybrid. As part of the deal, Denji can still have some semblance of a normal life. But when his demonic duty calls, he can transform himself into the grotesque Chainsaw Man.

The teaser trailer for Chainsaw Man doesn’t really give too much of the story away. But it does offer a few glimpses of the title character in action.

Can’t wait for the Resident Evil 4 remake? Watch Chainsaw Man
Leon leans on a window in Resident Evil 4 remake.

With the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake looming ever closer, fans may be looking for something to whet their appetites with. Given Resident Evil 4's unique identity, it's often hard to find media that matches what the third-person shooter delivers. Narratively, it rides a delicate line between shocking horror and camp comedy in a way that doesn’t seem like it would work on paper, but in execution gives the game a voice all of its own.

There aren’t many other video games that successfully pull off RE4’s mix of tones although some like Lollipop Chainsaw and other games in the Resident Evil series have tried. For all their effort, though, games going for a similar feeling as Resident Evil 4 tend to miss the mark in one way or another whether that’s due to a lack of solid horror moments or self-aware camp from a writing perspective. This has made recommending things similar to RE4 to people who are looking for more sort of tricky. Other than a small handful of other pieces of media like Evil Dead 2, finding a good recommended companion piece for the game is a difficult task.

The fall 2022 anime season looks to be a promising close to the year before Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga season 2, and Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 take the stage next year. That means what's left of the year should be bookended by some impressive anime premieres, as the various shows and movies that have been released this year have been quite high-profile.

And thanks to the mainstream spotlight that the genre has commanded more of in recent years, it's more accessible than it's ever been. Several of these series are just starting their TV runs, like the first anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man and the latter end of Spy x Family's debut season, but the final batch of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean episodes on Netflix and One Piece's next theatrical venture will keep fans more than eager for the rest of 2022.

Batman Beyond deserves a ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ animated movie
Terry McGinnis as Batman in promo art for the Batman Beyond animated series.

DC Comics launched its DC Animated Universe to emphatic success with the early '90s phenomenon that was Batman: The Animated Series, and it also sowed the seeds for the universe's most inventive spin on the brooding hero. On top of creating arguably the most quintessential Batman project ever, it paved the way for other characters within the DC Universe to get their time in the spotlight. The most unexpected hit, however, was arguably Batman Beyond. This show and the concept behind it seemed to come out of nowhere, but it became an acclaimed classic nonetheless.

For the time, it's amazing how well the animated show did considering the ambitious choice to take Bruce Wayne out of the mantle and have someone else don the cape and cowl as the series' protagonist instead. But despite how beloved it quickly became, Batman Beyond has yet to receive a new adaptation outside of the comics, yet, the lucrative success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has left the blueprint wide open since 2018.
