What’s new on Disney+ in December 2024
The promo poster for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

Disney+ has dropped a lot of coal in the stockings of subscribers who were used to a full-service streamer prior to this year. Even now, much of the content in the Disney+ December lineup is shared with Hulu, including the first 20 seasons of Law & Order, the horror film Cuckoo, and the action series Paris Has Fallen. What's the point of having two streaming services — even in a Disney bundle — if they're already sharing content?

Thankfully, Disney+ is also bringing some Christmas gifts in December to serve as a reminder of why this streamer was once considered the best alternative to Netflix. Where else are you going to get a new Star Wars series (Skeleton Crew), the third season of Marvel Studios' animated show What If...?, a new Doctor Who Christmas special, and an Elton John special? Those are the kind of things that make Disney+ worth the money, rather than a warmed-over Hulu alternative. Disney+ should spend 2025 embracing the idea of actually giving people the special content that they signed up for in the first place.

Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn in "A Quiet Place: Day One."

Most of Amazon Prime Video's additions tend to be movies, but December is going to be big for TV lovers. On the first of the month, Prime Video dropped Kevin Costner's first Western TV project, Hatfields & McCoys, classic dramas Falcon Crest and Knots Landing, modern classic Nip/Tuck, the spy action thriller Nikita, and a seminal sci-fi series called Babylon 5. The travel series Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations is also now on Prime Video.

December's movie lineup is also very impressive, including A Quiet Place: Day One, Knives Out, The Batman, both Sicario films, Fatal Attraction, and more. There's also a new Prime Video animated anthology series, Secret Level, that looks very intriguing.

Everything coming to PBS in December 2024
The cast of Call the Midwife.

December is going to be a much slower month on PBS than November, but there's still going to be a lot to watch. Call the Midwife will have its annual holiday special ahead of a new season in 2025. The Violent Femmes are getting a 40th anniversary concert special, while Sara Bareilles is ringing in 2025 with a New Year's Eve concert of her own.

There is also an assortment of PBS news and nature specials, which have been the hallmark of Public Broadcasting Service for decades. Even if Christmas specials aren't your thing, PBS is still bringing the holiday joy directly to you. If you missed the best shows on PBS from November, you can still stream those online. However, you must wait for the premiere dates listed below to catch everything coming to PBS in December.
