Everything coming to Max (formerly HBO Max) in October 2024

5 people stand in a field in Salem's Lot.
Warner Bros.

Spooky season is right around the corner, and the folks at HBO and Max intend to throw a monster mash that will impress the most jaded of every ghoul and goblin out there. But the streamer has more than just tricks and treats to dish out in October.

In addition to finally premiering the long-delayed Stephen King adaption Salem’s Lot, the streamer will debut the original series The Franchise, which takes a comedic look into the making of a big-budget superhero movie. Other notable additions to the programming slate include the A24 drama Tuesday with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the streaming debut of MaXXXine, the final chapter in the X trilogy.

How was 2024’s most disgusting movie made? Well, now we know
the substance making of 2025 margaret qualley in

Have you taken The Substance? That's one of the few marketing slogans used to promote Coralie Fargeat's groundbreaking body horror hit, which dazzled and repulsed both critics and audiences all last year. The film tells the odd story of Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), a fitness TV star who is forced out of her job because she just turned 50. Desperate to get back into the spotlight, she takes an illegal street drug named, you guessed it, The Substance to make herself young again.

How does that happen? Well, spoiler alert: She spawns a younger version of herself via her back, which opens to give birth to a newer, younger person. This version, named Sue (Margaret Qualley), can only be free for seven days; if she goes over her time limit, Elisabeth's body deteriorates. It doesn't take a genius to guess what happens next.

The 5 best 2024 movies to watch in IMAX, ranked
A motorcycle gang rides in the desert in Furiosa.

Although the IMAX format has been around since 1970, Hollywood has only come to embrace it within the last 25 years. Now, IMAX films are such a key part of the cinema landscape that studios jockey to lock up the most IMAX screens for their big-budget movies. Unfortunately, not all films are created equal and it's not enough to have an IMAX screen if the movie doesn't lend itself to the format.

If we had to pick the best movie to watch in IMAX in 2024, we probably would have gone with Christopher Nolan's Interstellar, which was rereleased last year to sold-out IMAX theaters. It's still incredible to watch 10 years later. But since we're here to pick the five best 2024 movies to watch in IMAX, we have to leave Interstellar out of the mix. Regardless, these five films below proved their worth on Hollywood's biggest canvas. We'll just have to hope they're rereleased in the future if we ever want to see them in IMAX again.

The 5 best drama movies of 2024, ranked
Guy Pearce in The Brutalist.

Despite the overpowering presence of blockbusters, 2024 was a great year for drama movies. It was just more difficult to find them in theaters, as limited releases or direct-to-streaming debuts seem to be the fate of films that aren't designed to be huge moneymakers. Regardless, a handful of dramas broke out from the pack and they will likely be remembered as some of the top films of the year.

Our picks for the five best drama movies of 2024 include two period dramas, and the film that may close the book on one of Hollywood's living legends. The other two choices feature an inspiring tale of redemption through the arts, and a film that finds unexpected thrills and drama in the heart of the Vatican.
