Death takes a bow in the first trailer for the 'Flatliners' remake

It’s been almost a year since the last update on Sony Pictures’ remake of Flatliners, the 1990 thriller that followed a group of medical students on a mission to discover what happens after death. The latest news regarding the project is a pretty big, though, as it offers up the film’s very first trailer.

Featuring the tagline “You haven’t lived until you’ve died,” the trailer indicates that the remake will hew close to the source material, but with a more modern setting and some new twists on the terrifying experiences awaiting its characters.

Directed by Niels Arden Oplev, who helmed the original, Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the film follows in the footsteps of the original with an impressive ensemble cast led by Academy Award nominee Ellen Page (Juno, Inception). Page is joined by Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), Kiersey Clemens (Dope), and James Norton (Happy Valley).

The script for the remake was penned by Source Code screenwriter Ben Ripley, and the story once again chronicles the experiences of five medical students staging a dangerous experiment in which they’re repeatedly brought back from death after having their hearts stopped. Hoping to gain some insight into what happens after we die, the students soon learn that blurring the boundary between life and death can have dark, deadly consequences and force them to face the sins of their pasts.

The original Flatliners was directed by Joel Schumacher (St. Elmo’s Fire, The Lost Boys) and featured an all-star cast, with Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon playing the film’s medical students. The film’s script was penned by Peter Filardi (The Craft), and it earned more than $61 million during its initial theatrical run.

The remake of Flatliners is scheduled to hit theaters September 29.

A24 released the tense first trailer for Warfare, an upcoming war film written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland.
Set in 2006, Warfare follows a group of American Navy SEALs inside the home of an Iraqi family. The platoon is observing enemy forces from afar when an explosion rocks the house and forces the soldiers into action. The heart-pounding footage teases a story told in real time and based on "the memory of the people who lived it."
Warfare boasts an impressive ensemble of young male actors, including D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henrique Zaga, Joseph Quinn, and Charles Melton.

Mendoza, an Iraq war veteran, served as the military supervisor on the set of the Garland-directed Civil War, a dystopian action thriller about a group of journalists covering a violent conflict within the U.S. Released in April, Civil War carried the highest budget in A24's history at $50 million. However, the gamble paid off, as the film grossed over $126 million, the second most for an A24 film behind Everything Everywhere All at Once.

Austin Butler is firing up his Huey Lewis and the News records to play Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino's American Psycho.

Per Variety, Butler will star as the villainous protagonist in a new feature film adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel. Guadagnino will direct from a screenplay by The Report's Scott Z. Burns. Guadagnino's American Psycho will be a new interpretation of the novel, not a remake.

The Rage Virus has evolved in the first trailer for 28 Years Later, the long-awaited third film in the zombie apocalypse franchise created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.

The terrifying footage is set to an eerie reading of Rudyard Kipling's poem Boots. The trailer highlights the beginning of the zombie virus wreaking havoc in the U.K. It then jumps to 10,228 days later, as a group of survivors lives in isolation on a heavily guarded island. One of those survivors is played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who heads to the mainland armed with a bow and arrow.
